MEDLICOTT, Thomas George, passed away peacefully at Bethany
Collegeside nursing home in Red Deer, Alberta, on Saturday, October 23,
2021, at the age of 83. Tom was born on October 18, 1938, in Trail, BC. He
was raised in the Village of Chapman Camp, which eventually became part of
Kimberley, BC. He moved around the country for education and work
purposes, residing in Vancouver, Toronto, Moose Jaw, Regina, Edmonton,
and finally settling in Red Deer, Alberta.
He was predeceased by his parents, Ina and Thomas, and his wife, Elsie. He is
survived by his daughter, Barbara (Trevor) Wooff, and their children, Thomas
(Sarah Gresdal) and Rachel. He also leaves behind to mourn, his sister, Gail
(Gary) McLean, nieces Terri Fergus, Cathy Graham, and their families.
After graduating from high school, Tom realized a lifelong dream to go to sea,
by joining the Royal Canadian Navy’s officer training school. When further
advancement could not be achieved without a university degree, he enrolled in
the University of British Columbia, earning a Bachelor of Science degrees in
Mathematics and Physics. Years later, attending the University of Regina, he
would add a degree in Computing Science to his resume. In 1963, Tom joined
the Canadian Weather Service and spent 32 years as a meteorologist. Starting
out forecasting the weather, Tom expanded into supervisory work, and was
heavily involved in things such as setting up the Doppler Radar system in
Alberta after the Edmonton Tornado of 1987. Expanding from Severe
Weather, Tom is responsible for much of what the public knows about the
Ozone Layer, and Ultraviolet Radiation and the importance of Sunscreen.
Both before and after his retirement, he was heavily involved in his church.
Following the death of his wife Elsie, in 2005 he decided to downsize and
moved to Red Deer, where he was actively involved in the life of his
grandchildren, Thomas and Rachel.
Due to COVID-19, a funeral will not be held at this time. A Memorial and
Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Internment will take place at
the Kimberley Cemetery on Monday, November 1, 2021. Arrangements
entrusted to Eventide Funeral Home of Red Deer, Alberta.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Mazankowski
Alberta Heart Institute.
