Soren Hansen

Respected local businessman. Skilled craftsman. Talented jack-of-all-trades. Natural mentor and leader.
Anyone who knew Soren knew he lived life large and that whatever he put his mind to, he could do. Family, friends and hard work defined a life well-lived. His interests over the years included jet boat racing, hot rods, and photography. He was a self-taught and self-made man who put great importance on meaningful relationships in the community. Soren was the proud head of a beautifully blended family. He is survived by his partner Cheryl Vold, daughters Dana (Morten), Kylene Heykants (Adam), Tanya Baker (Mike), brother Martin, sister Jo (Trish) and Gunnar Christensen, who was like a brother to Soren. Through his relationship with Cheryl, Soren’s family grew to include Shawn Vold (Janene) and Layna Palechek (Chris and their children Jake, Cole and Nik). Soren was predeceased by his brother Jack (Connie). Born in Denmark, Soren immigrated to Central Alberta with his family in 1954. The Hansen family later moved to the Poplar Ridge area. His early life in Canada was spent helping to build the family farm, but Soren had an entrepreneurial spirit that took his life in a different direction. As a young man, Soren started Western Collision Repairs, the first of many business interests in Red Deer that lasted his lifetime, including S.K. Builders, Eagle Automotive and Bumper to Bumper. In recent years his interests turned to commercial building and renovation work, including Red Deer Primary Care Network and Central Alberta AFSC offices. Soren had a passion for his community and was committed to the idea of giving back. He lent his talent and energy to many local projects, including the Downtown Business Association, Piper Creek Foundation, Credit Union Board of Directors, Red Deer Housing Authority and Rock’n Red Deer Super Run. He was also involved in the installation of the Ghost Collection of bronze sculptures in downtown Red Deer. The impact of this loss will be felt by many. To this respected and respectful member of the community, we thank and salute you: SKAL SOREN!
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Black Knight Inn on Saturday February 8th at 3 pm. In accordance with Soren’s wishes, a party featuring old cars and plenty of beer is planned for the summer of 2020, with details to follow in the coming months. Soren’s family will be forever grateful for the outstanding care he received at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre in Calgary and at the Red Deer Hospice. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Red Deer Hospice Society in memory of Soren Hansen. https://www.reddeerhospice.com/donate1.html
