Shirley Poynter, of Red Deer, passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 8, 2026, at the age of 91, with her loving family by her side.
Shirley will be deeply missed by her sons David (Jackie) and Norm (Sarah); her grandchildren Christopher, Benjamin, Sarah, and Nicholas; and her great-grandchildren Emmett and Tessa. She is also lovingly remembered by her sisters Marg Bellamy and Lynn Petersen, and her brother Bob Christensen.
She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 58 years, Murray, in 2013, and by her sister Kathy (Bill) Brannen in 2024.
Shirley was a woman with a warm and caring heart who touched the lives of many and will be dearly missed by all who knew her. She was deeply committed to her church, Sunnybrook United Church in Red Deer, where she was an active and joyful member of the choir and the United Church Women’s Group. Through the Golden Blades Skating Club, her church, and many social activities, Shirley and Murray formed lifelong friendships that meant so much to them.
After Murray’s passing, Shirley was supported by many wonderful neighbours and friends in the Westpark community and beyond—far too many to name. She was especially grateful for the kindness and friendship of Ruth and Jim, Barb and Neil, Chess, Shannon and Teresa, Trevor, and his son Cole, who each played an important role in her life.
Our gratitude would not be complete without mentioning everything that Aunt Lynn and Gary have done over the years. Including but not limited to, carpentry, chauffeur services, personal shopper, and even comic relief.
The family extends their heartfelt thanks to the incredible teams on Units 21 and 32, and the Emergency Department at Red Deer Regional Hospital, as well as the compassionate caregivers at Timberstone Mews, for their exceptional care and support.
A Celebration of Shirley’s Life will be held Friday May 8th at 1:30 pm at the Sunnybrook United Church 12 Stanton Street, Red Deer, AB
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Shirley’s honour to: Red Deer Regional Health Foundation Red Deer, AB and or Sunnybrook United Church 12 Stanton Street, Red Deer, AB
