Sheila Dorothy Anderson
1929 – 2025
Sheila Dorothy Anderson (née Latus) passed away peacefully November 8, 2025, eight days after her 96th birthday.
Sheila was born on 31-October-1929 as the first of six children to George and Gwen Latus on a homestead in the wilderness of northern Saskatchewan in the vicinity of the village of Bapaume. There was no electricity, no running water, no telephone, no cars, trucks, or tractors.
Growing up on the family farm, Sheila made the two-mile trip on foot or on horseback along with her siblings to the one room school, “OXO School”, in Bapaume through completion of grade ten. She graduated with a command of reading, writing and arithmetic, including the most beautiful cursive writing. Sheila worked on the family farm, then at the nearby McDonald ranch. She moved away to Wadena SK, where she worked as a domestic helper, then to Kerrobert SK, where she worked first at the hospital and then at Sample’s Department Store. Sheila she met her husband-to-be, Douglas Anderson, in Kerrobert. Doug and Sheila were married in 1956 and began their family of five children in 1957. They raised their family in Kindersley, Swift Current, Success, Hatton, and Maple Creek, Saskatchewan. They retired to the Red Deer, Alberta area in 1985, living several years in Sylvan Lake. After Doug passed away in 2011, Sheila moved to Red Deer, near her daughter Louise and her sister Judy. In recent years, Sheila enjoyed ‘visiting’ with her children, grand-children, and great-grandchildren over video calls on her iPad, a remarkable arc of innovation and technology experienced in her generation.
Sheila was a master gardener and grower of house plants. Every year she canned pickles, fruits, jams/jellies, tomatoes. She cooked, baked, and kept the house for seven. She loved to read. She loved sewing and could sew everything from quilts to clothes to formal gowns. She taught sewing to 4H kids in Success. She was a Riders fan and avid follower of Canadian curlers. Camping was one of her favourite things to do throughout her life.
Sheila is pre-deceased by her husband Doug, parents George and Gwen Latus, her brothers Ernie and Warren (Alma), and her sister Joyce (Allan) McLeod. She is survived by her sisters Merril Priestly and Judy (Robert) Andres, sister-in-law Alma Latus, daughters Donna (Calvin) Drever and Louise (Darcy) Anderson, her sons Ron (Wanda), Rod (Heidi), and Ian (Jenni Leah) Anderson, grandchildren Chris (Meaghan) Drever and Tyler (Cheryce) Drever, Charmaine (Brian) Verbonac and Breanne Anderson, Brennan and Kyle Anderson, Jessica Grimard, and great grandsons Brody and Shay Drever, and Grayson Verbonac.
The family would like to thank Dr. Taylor, the staff at Aspen Ridge Senior Residence in Red Deer, and the staff at the Red Deer Hospital for their kind care of Mom.
Sheila wished that any donations be made to The Lending Cupboard (lendingcupboard.ca) and Ronald McDonald House (ronaldmcdonaldhousealberta.org).
A celebration of life for Doug and Sheila Anderson will be held at the Bapaume Cemetery in summer 2026, details to be announced.
