Sandra "Sandy" Richard ~ Jan. 31, 1952 - May 15, 2026

Sandy was a person who always wanted to help those who needed it most. She always had a smile for those who crossed her path and a heart that held a safe space for those that needed it. Family was everything to her and a true light appeared in her eyes when she got to spend time with those she loved the most.
Working for over 25 years with the Red Deer Catholic School Division, she worked at several schools. Her career at Red Deer Catholic began at St. Theresa of Avila, where she worked with the ESL program and as the librarian. As a child of Latvian immigrants, who did not speak English until she went to school, she was always proud to have been a part of the ESL program. When Holy Family was approved as a new elementary school, she was honoured to be the one to catalogue and barcode each and every book that entered the library and open it up for the kids to enjoy. Her final school was Notre Dame, where she also worked as the librarian for St. Gabriel Cyber School, shipping books to kids around Canada and even the world as they were away from Red Deer but still wanting to continue their education with the Alberta Curriculum. She loved being able to create safe spaces where all children had an escape from the world and could help them grow in their own unique way and was always proud to have been a safe place for the students that needed her. She was always sharing stories of the joy she received from the students and staff she spent time with, up until her final stay in the hospital. If you ever see a Scholastic book fair, think of Sandy and her love of giving the gift of reading to all children.
Born in Hamilton, Ontario, to a family of Latvian immigrants, she was always proud to be Canadian. Cheering for her teams, the Hamilton Tiger Cats, and the Montreal Canadiens, made her proud, even living out here, in the West. The simple things brought her the most happiness: daisies, anything the colour green, wine gums, chocolate covered sponge toffee, time at Panorama, and moments with those she loved more than more.
If you would like to honour her life through a donation, please consider https://koalaconservationaustralia.org.au/ an organization that has a koala hospital and supports conservation projects to protect her favourite animal. Kiva.org is a microloan organization in which she made over 3200 loans, as her initial loans got repaid and she was able to relend, to help those needing a small loan in their underserved community, making a loan in her honour would continue her joy to share with others.
