Ronald Alan Salomons passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Thursday January 27, 2022 at the age of 66. Ron leaves behind numerous family members and friends, and every one of them knowing just how privileged they were to have him as a part of their lives.
Loving husband to Deb, devoted father to Ashley and Gavin, Papa to grandchildren Jacob and Rhaya, brother to Ralph (Patty), Marvin (Shirley), Henry (Bev), Ken (Trudy), Dale (Laurie) and Bruce (Sandra), treasured son-in-law to Ann Meers, brother-in-law to Ken (Connie), Jan and Karen, and “Funcle” to numerous nieces and nephews.
Ron was born in Lacombe, AB on October 17,1955 to the late Theresa and John Salomons. He was proud of his Dutch heritage and maintained his view “If you ain’t Dutch you ain’t much!”. His early years were spent on the family chicken farm, running, playing and doing the stuff boys do with his brothers in the hills, down by the creek, in the trees… and with possibly some chickens too. After leaving their family farm to embark on his own life’s journey, Ron started in construction, and then followed a path to the oilfield with his work for Nowsco well servicing, which he stayed a part of for many years.
In 1989 Ron was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, a devastating diagnosis as he was just beginning to build his family with 1 young daughter at home and a son on the way. Even after his diagnosis of MS, Ron continued to contribute to the best of his ability and while his role within the company adjusted, his work ethic never hindered. He worked harder than ever until the very last day he physically could, when he then took his well-deserved disability to be at home with his family, until his official retirement in 2020.
Ron’s disease may have challenged him, but it never broke his strong spirit or hilarious sense of humour. He never acted as a victim. His pride was admirable and his character strong. He used his sharp mind and innovative abilities to be productive and self-sufficient right into his final days, deftly managing the logistics of his own care and other household matters, including designing the house that made it possible for him to be an active member of his family, in their comfortable and loving home. He took immense joy and pride in the accomplishments of his children and grandchildren, whose friends loved hanging out at the house and with Ron. He was so proud of everyone so close to him. His amazing wife that stood by his side through it all, his two children that he never stopped guiding, and his grandkids that lit up his life anytime they were together. His love of Football Sundays, music, trivia, helping Ashley with anything excel related, chatting sports bets with Gavin, and watching his grandson’s hockey games, were some of his greatest joys. But nothing held a candle to the love he had for his family, and them to him in return. He will be lovingly remembered and missed forever.
Those who had the privilege of knowing Ron will have the opportunity to share memories and stories at a celebration of his life on Saturday, February 5, at 2pm in the Heartland Room at The Harvest Centre at Westerner Park, 4847A 19th. St., Red Deer.
