Roland William Cameron (Duke) Harju
February 1, 1953 – March 27, 2024
It is with much sadness, we announce the passing of Roland (known as Duke to family and close friends) Harju on March 27, 2024 at the age of 71 at Michener Extendicare, Red Deer.
Duke was born in Red Deer, Alberta on February 1, 1953. He had a charming smile from the start and loved being outside in nature and being with family and friends.
At an early age, he developed an interest in music and especially drumming which he excelled at later. During his young years, he joined with buddies and neighbourhood friends and formed rock bands – the latest of which were called “Griffin”. The band played at events all over Alberta including headlining for another band at the Calgary Stampede. He joked when young, “it was the easiest way to make a hundred dollars” – in his own words.
Duke’s life was not always easy due to ongoing health issues but he kept his caring, compassionate attitude and his strong love of family and friends his entire life. He was the last remaining band member and was saddened when he learned of the last living member passing fairly recently.
We will always remember his kind and sensitive nature and way of listening and being there for people.
Duke leaves to mourn his loss his devoted sister, Deb Whitehead of Red Deer; his nephews, Todd Whitehead (Amy), Ella and Elliot of Calgary; and Tim Whitehead and his daughter Lyla, of Red Deer; also his stepfather, Ted Rokosh of Olds, Alberta. Duke was predeceased by his loving parents, Joan Rokosh in 1984 and Cam Harju in 2010 as well as grandparents earlier.
Duke was always a bright light in our family despite health issues. He will be forever missed and remembered and loved.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date in the summer.
Thank you to all the caring and wonderful staff at Michener Extendicare.
