Bob’s girls are very saddened to share that their dad, Robert William Walton, passed away peacefully at the great age of 92 years in the early hours of Tuesday, October 4, 2022. Dad loved a good obituary and we aim to make him proud.
Robert William Walton was born at Pine Lake, Alberta to George and Euphemia (McArthur) April 13, 1930. He was the youngest of five siblings. Cecil, Lillian (Stan), Marion (Borge), and Margory (Pete), all preceeded him in death, as have their spouses.
As a young man, Bob hauled water for oil rigs, worked as a farmhand for the Moran’s, but he mostly loved driving gravel trucks. He hauled for Joe Card, Winston Hurley, and finally retiring from Bettensons in 1995.
Bob met Marlene Prohl in 1965 at a dance at Pine Lake. They soon married, and two daughters, Joyce and Lisa were born. After a few moves around Alberta, in 1971 they settled their young family in Penhold.
Bob loved to tinker and build things. Never having much money, he found ways to bring adventure to his family by using his ingenuity and his own hands. To show his girls his love of camping, he built his own camper for his ’66 Chevy truck. He built a dune buggy out of a Volkswagen Beetle, thus providing many memories and the opportunity for him to teach his girls how to drive a stick shift, each by the age of 8 and 10.
“Heading out West”, was a phrase Dad used often. At the age of 78, he discovered quadding, eventually owning three so he could share his love of the west with his grandchildren. Dad continued camping on his own with his 5th wheel until the age of 87.
Dad was a simple man enjoying family tinkering in his shed, sharing stories and having a coffee at Glenn’s Restaurant. These were things that made him happy.
In 1987, Bob became a Poppa for the first time, a role he loved. Spoiling his grandchildren was something he enjoyed. Becoming a Great Poppa, was also a wonderful thing for him.
Bob was predeceased by Marlene in June 2002, and his grandson Mitchell, in January 2022. He will be forever missed by his two daughters and their spouses. Joyce and Brian Koteles, and Lisa and Darren Johnston. Shaun, Taneen (Corey), Danny and Olivia, will miss their Poppa. Kaysia, Ellie, Keegan, and Addie, will miss their Great Poppa. He is also survived by six nieces and three nephews.
Dad believed keeping active was the key to a long life and camping kept him young.
To honour him, a private family service will be held “Out West”.
“See you in The Funnies Dad”.
Love you,
Joyce and Lisa
