June 8, 1954 – September 4, 2026
Raymond Rosaire Berard, beloved father, grandfather, and husband, passed away suddenly on September 4, 2026, at the age of 72.
Following early years on airbases in Europe and eastern Canada, Ray was happy to settle back home in Red Deer, where he met his wife and raised their family. Ray worked as a journeyman auto body mechanic, before a transition to the oil and gas industry, specializing in oilfield safety since the late 80s.
Ray was a kind and generous soul, never judging others and befriending almost anyone. He was a brilliant handyman — a helpful neighbour always willing to pull out a tool, provide a fix, or lend a hand with whatever was needed. He was also a skilled custom knife maker, gifting beautiful treasures to many.
Ray found his greatest peace in nature, and was happiest on an adventure in the woods, beside a fire, or out on a river. Years of camping excursions with family and friends have provided endless treasured memories.
Lovingly known as “Bop” or “Papa”, he deeply adored his littles, and cherished every moment spent with them.
Ray is survived by Elaine, his wife of more than four decades, and their three children: Adam (Chelsea) — grandson Barrett; Alexandra (Aaron) — grandsons Evan and Leo; Meaghan (Adam) — grandchildren Mila and Ryker. He also leaves three siblings and numerous in-laws, nieces and nephews. Ray was predeceased by his mother Phyllis in 2012, and his father Paul, in 1971.
To respect Ray’s wishes, no funeral service will be held. Friends and family will celebrate his life at an outdoor gathering next June.
Ray’s family extend our heartfelt gratitude to Rocky Mountain House EMS, along with the staff and friends at the Black Sheep Campground, located on the shore of the North Saskatchewan — one of his favourite rivers.
In Ray’s memory, his family plan to establish an AED system supporting emergency cardiac response in the area.
We shall remember and appreciate Papa Ray with deep love, and forever cherish the good times!
