DUNHAM, Raymond I. C.
Raymond passed away on May 24, 2018 at the Red Deer Regional Hospital at the age of 79 years. Born to Clement and Jenny in June 1938 on a farm near Silver Creek, Manitoba, Ray was raised in his wonderful hometown of Birtle. As the baby of the family, he was spoiled by his dear sister, Iris, and twin brothers Bob and Garth.
April and Ray were married in Winnipeg in 1962, and soon after were blessed with their children: Casey (deceased), Whitney and Mark. A brief period in Calgary, followed by a move to Red Deer brought the family to their new hometown.
Ray’s career in the steel industry took him from selling culverts to Manitoba municipalities to erecting steel buildings throughout Alberta. His long association with Phoenix Construction and owners Howie, Cam and Doug was a pleasure and brought him in touch with many Central Alberta contractors where lifelong friendships were established. Never did a man enjoy his career choices as much as Ray did.
Ray believed in giving back to his community. He was involved through the years with Rotary, Special Olympics and Parkland Living and Support Society. He did not neglect his softer side. He sang barbershop with The Wayward Four, acted with Central Alberta Theatre and sang with The Red Deer Chamber Singers. He was a renaissance man.
His Granddaughters Amanda (Clayton) and Olivia gave him years of joy and laughter and when Great Granddaughters Jada and Hannah arrived, life only got brighter and more fun.
Ray recently mentioned that living 80 years was a good run for a fella. Ray lived long and well. He was much loved. He was content with the legacy he left.
The Dunham family wish to thank all the nurses and doctors who had a hand in trying to get Ray back to “the first nine” over the last year. June would have been his 80th birthday – on that day we hope you will raise a glass of Oyster Bay and think of a moment you got to spend with Ray Dunham.
A celebration of Ray’s life will take place in the upper level of Pidherney Centre (Red Deer Curling Club), 4725 – 43 St., Red Deer AB, on Thursday June 7, 2018 at @ 2:00 pm. If desired, memorial donations in Ray’s honor may be directed to the Red Deer Special Olympics, 4730 Ross Street, Red Deer AB, T4N 1X2. Condolences to Ray’s family may be emailed to meaningful@telus.net
