It is with deep sadness that we mourn the passing of Orville Clifford Van Slyke at the Red Deer Regional Hospital on September 13th, 2025, at the age of 87 years.
Orville was born in Heisler, AB in 1938 as the third son of a loving farming family. His family moved to the Aspelund area where he attended the Aspelund school and completed his education in Red Deer. Orville met Elizabeth Pierce in Red Deer, and they married in 1960 later having two sons, Mark in 1961 and Dale in 1963, and after a few years welcomed and adopted a young teen, Holly. While the couple farmed, Orville was also employed by Hayhoe’s Sheet Metal and Roofing company. Wanting more for his family he then attended N.A.I.T in Edmonton while Elizabeth (Betty) stayed at home with the children and after 4 years of training and apprenticeship he started his own company “O. Van Slyke Sheet Metal” selling and installing furnaces. After some years, Orville and Betty decided to raise Angus cattle under the name BETOR Farms. Although they loved farming their land and raising cattle, they both eventually retired and decided to enjoy their life spending quality time with their extended family.
Orville enjoyed dancing and even took dancing lessons with Betty, fishing, hunting in his earlier years, carpentry creating works of art and gifting these to family and friends, quadding in the mountains, camping, and feeding the birds and fish on his property. He especially enjoyed time spent with his grandchildren and later his great grandchildren, visiting friends and family, and many meals spent eating at his favorite restaurant, the RoundAbout Eatery in Sylvan Lake.
Orville will be loving remembered by his sons Mark (Lynette) and Dale (Sandra), his adopted daughter, Holly Anderson, his many grandchildren, Travis Anderson (Leslie), Amanda Anderson (Tyson), Marci Skinner (Andru), Landen Van Slyke (Josi), and Keegan Van Slyke (Riley). Also, to remember him will be his 12 great grandchildren, Jude, Vaughn, Thomas, Elia, Elyk, Beck, Koen, Brinn, Lillyanna, Dawson, Owen, and Bennett, his youngest brother Roger (Martha), and numerous nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, September 25th, 2025, at 1:00pm at the Red Deer Funeral Home: 6150 67 Street, Red Deer, AB. Please join us for a luncheon reception held after the memorial service at the Quality Inn: 7150 50th Avenue, Red Deer, AB.
