It is with profound sadness that our family announces the passing of Mrs. Mysie Mary (nee McKay) Dermott on Sunday, October 1, 2017 at the age of 94 years. Mysie was born on March 26, 1923 to Bertha and Hedley McKay, on their farm near Donalda, Alberta. Mysie was active in sports, especially basketball and pole-vaulting, while at Donalda High School. Mysie attended Technical School in Edmonton for a year; then in 1943, joined the war effort and served in the RCAF Women’s Division from 1943 to 1945 in southern Ontario. There she met LAC Murray Dermott from Alliston, Ontario; who became the love of her life. They married on the farm near Donalda on June 3, 1946 and raised a family of four children. From 1946 to 1974, the family lived at various RCAF Stations across Canada, as well as four years in France. On Murray’s retirement in 1974, they moved back to Alberta, settling in Stettler in 1976. After Murray’s death in 1982, Mysie continued to live in her home for the next ten years where she volunteered at the Tourist Bureau, Meals On Wheels, and was a member of the IODE and the UCW. She also enjoyed bowling and travelling with her friends and relatives. In 1992, Mysie moved to Marie and Chester Payne’s farm to be close to her beloved twin granddaughters. In 2006, Mysie returned to Stettler, where she enjoyed the lifestyle and fellowship of her neighbours at Paragon Place Lodge. Mysie wrote “Happening Through the Years”, a detailed history of the McKay and Dermott families. She will be lovingly remembered by her children, David of Nova Scotia, Gloria (Peter) Williams of Toronto, Ronald of Burlington, and Marie (Chester) Payne; and her granddaughters, Chantal and Thomasina of Clive. She will also be sadly missed by her brother, Herbert of California and sister-in-law, Evelyn of Donalda; as well as by her many friends and relatives. Mysie was predeceased by her loving husband, Murray, brothers, Wally of California and Don of Donalda, and sisters-in-law, Connie and Jesse of California. A Funeral Service will be held at the Stettler United Church, 4820 – 51 Street, Stettler, Alberta, on Wednesday, October 11, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. Memorial Donations in lieu of flowers, in Mysie’s honor may be made directly to the Heart and Stroke Foundation at www.heartandstroke.ca or to Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre , c/o Unit 32 at wwww.rdrhfoundation.com/donate-now.
