Mrs. Mary Susan Hogg passed away at Extendicare Michener Hill, Red Deer, Alberta on Saturday, December 14, 2019 at the wonderful age of 108 years. Mary was born at the family farm home, on April 20, 1911, near Byemoor, Alberta. Living to be almost 109 years of age, she saw many changes in her lifetime. Mary went from the days of horses being the main means of transportation, to man walking on the moon, telephones coming to rural Alberta, changing from wood stoves to natural gas heating and numerous other changes. She was a trained seamstress and was always interested in crafting; which included knitting, crocheting, hardanger, and tatting. She was always willing to share her knowledge with others and emphasized that education was extremely important. Mary enjoyed playing games, especially cards. She spent many hours playing games with her grandchildren. She had many wonderful memories that she liked to share and enjoyed a good visit.
Mary enjoyed many years of joy and happiness on the farm, near Huxley Alberta, a decade or so, at the Innisfail Country Lodge, another decade at the Sunrise Village, Olds and then her final few years at Extendicare Michener Hill, in Red Deer. She often had a smile to share and a good chuckle could be heard; as many stories were retold and new adventures shared. Her longevity was due in part to her positive attitude to many, her cheery outlook on life and her determination to share her good will and happiness with others. The family wishes to express their thanks to many in the communities of Huxley, Elnora, Innisfail, Olds and Red Deer, that contributed to her well being and care over the years. Mary is a true testament of a PIONEER that lived life to the fullest, built our country to be strong and ever-lasting; all while stepping up as a Canadian to create an accepting and non-judgmental attitude toward all those around her – neighbors and family alike. An inspiration to us all … a legacy of hope, unconditional love and deep kindness of unmatched proportions … thank you, Mary, Mom, Grandma, Great Grandma, Great Great Grandma, Sister, Aunt, Great Aunt and dear friend, to all who knew her.
Mary will be lovingly remembered by her two daughters, Donna (Bryan) Dowell and Betty Edwards of Olds, Alberta; her grandchildren, Brad (Marianne) Dowell of Olds, Scott (Maria) Dowell of Olds, Debbie Dowell of Olds and Charles (Tracy) Edwards of Halifax, Nova Scotia; her great grandchildren, Justin (Alicia) Dowell, Tyler (Bree) Dowell, Erika (Mat) Dowell-Bergeron, Amber Dowell, Marissa and Kaitlyn Dowell, Victoria Edwards and her great great granddaughter, Finley Dowell.
She will also be very sadly missed by her youngest and only remaining sibling, Eva Erickson; her two sisters-in-law, Norrine and Olwin; along with her two hundred plus nieces and nephews, other family members, and many dear friends and caregivers, over the years. Mary was predeceased by her husband of almost sixty-five years, John Hogg, her sisters, Lavina (Tom) Harris and Grace (Wilfred) Swain, her brothers, Bill, Joe (Ruth), Ed and Tommy (Jean), and twin infant daughters and her son in law Cecil Edwards.
