Mrs. Helen Barbara Whaley

Our hearts are torn in two, saddened by the thought of never seeing again that sparkle in her eyes, or hearing the laughter in her voice; yet we are joyful in knowing that she is at peace in the arms of our Savior, reunited with the loved ones that have gone before her. We announce the passing of Mrs. Helen Barbara Whaley on Tuesday, May 12, 2020 at the age of 83 years. She had spent the last few years in the loving community of the Eckville Manor House. Helen and her twin brother, Neil, were the beginning of a family for her parents, Eino and Bertha Granlund, followed by her sister, Joyce, brother, Ken and youngest sister, Rose. Raised in the Alhambra District, she met and fell in love with Ralph Whaley and the two married on December 29, 1956. Ralph and Helen went on to have four children of their own, Linda, Christine, William and Sandra. Family and friends were especially important to Helen and Ralph, as they raised their children with love and opened their home to many. Helen had the gift of hospitality; as there was always something fresh from the oven when guests would arrive. One of her specialties was chocolate cake with chocolate swirl icing. She had a memory for taking note of birthdays and anniversaries, and was especially excited when there was a new addition to the family. Helen had a talent for handicrafts; sewing, quilting, embroidery and cross stitching, that were all often gifted to her children and grandchildren. She also had the patience to teach those who wished to learn these crafts. Helen had a heart of compassion, as she cared for those with health issues; including Ralph, when he was stricken with cancer, which eventually took his life. She will be very lovingly remembered by her children, Linda Clancy, Christine (Gary) Curr, William (Cheryllynn) Whaley and Sandra Ploszak. Helen was blessed with eleven grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren, whom she loved very dearly. She will also be deeply missed by her brother, Ken (Donna) Granlund and her brother-in-law, George (Theresia) Whaley, along with numerous friends and family members. Helen was predeceased by her loving husband of fifty-one years, Ralph Whaley; her sons-in-law, Chester Ploszak and Lyle Clancy, her parents, Eino and Bertha Granlund; a brother, Neil Granlund and her sisters, Joyce Fulk and Rose Granlund. A small Memorial Service in Helen’s honour will be held, and although we are unable to gather at this time, it would be greatly appreciated if you would share with us your stories and memories of our mom.
