It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Miles Francis MacGregor, September 16th, 2021, in Red Deer, Alberta. “Frank” was born on January 6TH, 1939, in Campbellton, New Brunswick. He was the oldest of 8 children. Frank started work for the Canadian Government as a rail worker with the CNR and then joined the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF). Frank was always a handy guy and honed his skills in the RCAF as an airplane mechanic. He had many tales to tell as he travelled Canada and the world through the Armed Forces, which also included doing some work on the Avro Arrow. While in the Armed Forces, he met and married Karen. Shortly after marriage, Frank and Karen left the military and moved to Prince Albert, Saskatchewan.
In 1966, Frank started work at Saskatchewan Penitentiary. Here, Frank thrived; and flourished working on the Mental Health Unit where he was well respected by both offenders and staff. Frank volunteered his time with the Employee Assistance Program (EAP) and to the staff union, where eventually he became union President. He held that position for over 20 years.
Over the years, Frank received many awards in relation to his work and his volunteerism. In relation to volunteering, Frank gave his time freely to anyone who needed it or wanted it. Frank recognized the positive effect of sport and culture on youth and actively participated in several local and regional sport councils. He was instrumental in the success of several Saskatchewan Games serving as Chef de Missions numerous times. In addition to sport councils, Frank also devoted much time to Sea Cadets and Navy League. He also served as a school trustee, served on several local boards and was a Legion member. He enjoyed his farming lifestyle that encompassed strong community and family support in the Lily Plain area (where he resided for over 40 years) and was always quick to step up to help a friend or neighbour. Frank was devoted to all his volunteer work and took much solace from his roles.
Frank also ensured through the help of his wife, Karen, that their 4 children had every opportunity available. They were heavily involved in sports and recreational activities. Frank attended as many games/events as his schedule allowed. He was also very proud of all his children’s successes.
Frank truly was a people person; he gave his time to his family, his friends, his community and his government. Only illness was able to get him to retire from government service after 42 years service. Once retired, Frank tried to keep his volunteering up as much as he could. He took much comfort by joining APSAR, which helped retirees and their spouses navigate benefits. Frank was truly at his best when he was able to give himself to others. He loved to be busy and he struggled as his health took its toll on his inability to help others. Despite his ailing health, he still tried to help where he could.
Frank was predeceased by his parents, Miles and Francis; two of his brothers Bob and Ron, his sister Alice, and brother-in–law Richard. He is survived by his brothers: Jock (Karen), Jim (Irene), and Mack and as well as his sister Norma and sister-in-laws: Barbara and Robyn. He is survived by his wife, Karen, of 57 years; their four children, twins; Blair (Jaklin) and Brenda, son: Gordon (Carol) and daughter: Marlo (Stephen). Frank was a devoted grandfather to his grandchildren: Pouriya, Rowan, and Kyana. Frank is also survived by his mother-in-law: Margie Bell; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A graveside celebration of Frank’s life will take place at Prince Albert Memorial Gardens in Prince Albert, SK, on Saturday, September 25th, 2021, at 1:00 pm in the Garden of Christus, all is welcome. Due to Covid concerns there will not be a reception after this event.
The family sends much gratitude to the numerous nurses, doctors, pharmacists and homecare staff that helped him navigate his prolonged health issues. The family requests no flowers please. In relation to donations, the family would ask that you donate some of your time to your community in honour of Frank to aid your own community to be a better place.
