Michael Martin, born August 28, 1936, died peacefully on August 8, 2022. Born in Daysland, Alberta, he was the son of the late Steve and Mariana Martin and brother to Peter (Freida). Mike is survived by his three sons, Clayton (Joy), Lloyd (Sandra) and Carmen; and four grandchildren Hayden, Tess, Ryan, and Steven.
Mike was raised in the modest home of a Ukrainian family in Daysland, Alberta. Mike’s parents gave him something far greater than material wealth. They instilled Christian values along with a robust work ethic. Mike was strong in his catholic faith, although not much of a church goer. A cross and picture of Jesus hung on the wall of his living room alongside a copy of his favorite bible verse.
Mike had a passion to leave Daysland and explore a bigger world. This led to his decision to attend SAIT and become an auto body mechanic. Mike was a talented mechanic for 42 years. He was first hired at Terry Gallon which was later brought under the umbrella of Kip Scott where he literally “grinded” as a faithful employee for 35 years. Some of Mike’s friends passed away relatively young due to the chemical exposure that was a part of the trade. Despite his belief that he would follow suit, Mike lived a long life. He remained clear minded and witty up to the day he died.
In his younger years Mike took pleasure in hitting the road, with his arm out the window and a cigarette in his mouth. He loved his booze; Hamms Beer was notoriously his favourite. Mike’s adventurous spirit inspired road trips all over the Northwestern United States. He took his family to Disneyland, and he travelled to Mexico, Hawaii, and the Philippines. Mike found something magical about the change of pace, the warm breezes and the sun that comes with a southern holiday.
Mike aspired to be a musician, playing his guitar, writing lyrics and singing. He had a particular love for country music legends like Hank Williams. He even sounded a bit like Hank (or at least that is what Mike thought).
In retirement Mike enjoyed camping and sitting on his back deck. He loved nature, large trees and the sound of birds. He used to enjoy a long morning walk, a coffee at MacDonalds and an occasional beer in the afternoon at the legion. Always a very private man, in recent years he found more peace in the comfort of his home. The advice he shared was “never stop walking”.
At Mike’s request, he was laid to rest at Alto Rest Cemetery with immediate family in attendance. Condolences may be left for the family at www.eventidefuneralchapels.com
