Mervin Sheldon McDougall passed away on July 31, 2018 at the age of 79 years. Merv was born in Saskatoon in September 1938. He grew up on the family farm in Aylesbury, Saskatchewan. While in Aylesbury, he worked construction, digging basements and such, before moving to Regina, where he worked at CKCK Television as a cameraman. It was during this time that he met his lovely wife of 53 years, Susan.
After the TV station, Merv bought a freight truck and trailer and operated as Regina Cartage, hauling freight in the city and neighbouring towns. Merv and Sue then moved to Moose Jaw, where he worked with his Uncle Gord at his service station. After Moose Jaw, Merv moved the family to Red Deer in 1973, where he started working at the City of Red Deer in the Water and Sewer department and moved up to an Equipment Operator. During this time, he bought seven bare acres east of Red Deer, where he built the acreage of his dreams. He worked at the City for 25-and-a-half years before retiring at the age of 55. During his retirement he worked on his sisters family farm at harvest as well as his neighbor Ian during harvest seasons.
Merv enjoyed taking his wife dancing at the local community dances as well as being an active curler in Delburne. Merv was never one to turn down an invitation for a visit. If you were a stranger standing beside him, he would never hesitate to strike up a conversation. He always had a sense of humour and was known to drop a lot of “Mervinisms”
Merv is survived by his wife Sue; son Mick (Deb); daughters Shelley (Scott), Cathy (Jason); five grandchildren: Jordon, Connor, Tristan, Jacob and Sydney; six step-grandchildren. Merv is also survived by his mother Elva and sister Jan (Guy) Nolting and their sons Jason and Tyler and families. Sue’s sister Janet (Carm) Scott and their sons Darren, Darcy, Dale and Rick Scott and their families as well as numerous extended family members and friends.
The family would like to thank the staff at the Red Deer Hospice Society and the Central Alberta Cancer Centre for their wonderful care for Merv.
