Melvin “Mel” Gustav Homme
It is with profound sadness we announce Mel’s passing on August 18th, 2026, at Bethany Sylvan Lake at the age of 91.
Mel was predeceased by his parents, Emma & Aksel, his loving wife of 60 years, Lorene, three brothers, Cecil, Bill & Lewis, 1 sister, Bernice and several in-laws, nieces and nephews.
He is survived by is son Don (Colleen) daughter Debbie (Mark) his 4 Grandchildren Andrew, Paige, Aksel & Steaven as well as 2 sisters, Lil McDermott and Norma Petriko and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mel loved woodworking, hunting & fishing, working on small engines & his retirement project which is a 1946 Dodge Truck that he restored himself from the frame up.
Through the years he attended many car shows & parades with the 46 and won several awards with it.
Mel worked at Northwest Motors in Red Deer for well over 40 years, and even after retirement would be called in to help with odd jobs, which he was always willing to accommodate.
A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, August 27th at Eventide Funeral Home, 4820 45th Street Red Deer. Everyone is welcome to join the procession that will leave Eventide at 1:00 pm led by Mel’s 1946 Dodge, to Alto Reste Cemetery approximately 8 kms East of Red Deer on Highway 11 for the Graveside Service.
Following the Graveside Service, we will gather back at Eventide for a time of reflection and a light reception.
The family wishes to thank the caregivers at Bethany Sylvan Lake for caring for Mel since November of 2025.
Memorial donations may be made to Canadian Cancer Society, the Bethany Care society or a charity of the donor’s choice.
