Melvin Albert Langevin “Mel”
It is with sadness that the family of Mel Langevin announce his passing on August 26, 2025 at the age of 82, at Bethany CollegeSide Continuing Care Residence.
Mel is survived by his wife of 62 years, Carolyn Langevin and his children Tim (Karen Ruddick), Suzanne Sutherland (Troy), and Greg (Janelle) and his cherished grandchildren Ryan and Justin Langevin, Josh Sutherland and Jax and Journey Langevin. Mel will also be remembered by his sister Barbara Mahaffey (Richard Lemieux) of Edmonton, sister-in-law Penny Garrison (Bob) of Innisfail and brother-in-law Dale Jenson (Val) of Dawson Creek, BC, as well as numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Mel was predeceased by his parents John and Hazel Langevin as well as his brother Ken Langevin.
Mel was born in Red Deer on September 16, 1942. As a young child, his family lived in Lacombe and Alix, and later, the family moved to Innisfail. His love of hockey began when he played the sport as a child, which lead to him being an unwavering Montreal Canadiens fan; he had the many hats, sweaters, and jackets to prove it! His hockey-playing years extended to his last year of high school in Innisfail and for a couple years beyond that, when Mel played hockey for the Innisfail Eagles.
After Mel and Carolyn were married and moved to Red Deer, Mel was employed at Union Tractor, eventually becoming the Branch Manager, and working for the company for a total of 20 years. During his time at Union Tractor, Mel was part of the “breakfast club” at the North Hill Inn with his work/business associates, many who remained dear friends throughout his life. In addition to his work, Mel enjoyed family vacations, and family summers spent in Pine Lake at the trailer. Mel also liked collecting things that were old and unique, like his prized possession 1947 CJ-2A Willys jeep, which he had hoped would some day be restored. His other interests included country music, rodeo and chuckwagon races.
Mel suffered a brain injury in 1982 and was not able to continue to work after the injury. For a good number of years, he continued to live at home, and developed an interest in woodworking, where he would especially look forward to getting out to his weekly group woodworking classes. Mel would eventually become a resident of Bethany CollegeSide for the last years of his life. The family would like to acknowledge their appreciation to the staff of Bethany, for treating Mel with the utmost care and compassion during his time as a resident.
There will be no formal funeral service; the family will have a gathering in Mel’s honour the afternoon of September 20, 2025.
Memorial donations may be made to Central Alberta Brain Injury Society or to Red Deer & District SPCA.
