(Dec 25, 1936 – April 25, 2021)
Mom passed away peacefully at 84 years of age. She was pre-deceased by her mother Marie Lacerte, father Emmanual Caplette, sister Lorraine Marchand and brothers Albert, Paul, Leonard, and Ceril Caplette. She is survived by her husband George Owen, brother Arthur Caplette, children; Barbara (Roger Bouthillier ), Linda, Bonnie, and Robert Burns , grandchildren; Melissa, Collin, Brett, Adam, Kyle and great-grandson Dawson, as well as her life long friend Denise McCartney and many extended family, friends, and four legged pets.
Margaret was born in Coronach, Sask. She met and married our dad Dave Burns and they resided in North Battleford, Sask. In 1967 they loaded up the hay wagon and moved to their farm in Alberta. They cleared the land and built a home for their 4 children. Gardens were planted, farm animals purchased, and the children attended school in the nearby town of Ashmont. Later, Mom resided in Edmonton and after several years moved back to North Battleford to care for her mother. Together they relocated to Alix, AB and then to Red Deer, with her mom residing in a nearby Senior Centre. After her mother’s passing, Mom made her home in Mallaig, AB, near her son Robert and sister Lorraine. It is here she met and married George Owen.
Mom enjoyed gardening and took great pride in caring for her yard and home. She was a great cook and did a lot of her own canning and freezing. She was an excellent billiard player, winning many tournament trophies. She loved to dance, listen to country music, play bingo, and attend Legion and community functions. She usually had a jigsaw or crossword puzzle on the go, loved picking berries, spending time at the lake, and was a worthy opponent in a game of cribbage, where she travelled and competed in many tournaments. She loved the visits by her children, friends, and family.
Mom struggled with and endured the affects of Rheumatoid Arthritis most of her adult life and eventually it was necessary to be closer to family. Again, she took up residence in Red Deer, AB to be near her daughters Linda and Bonnie. She was able to get out and enjoy the outdoors and community gardens, visit with her family, go shopping and spend time with her friend Louise Deacon. She resided at the Michener Extendicare for 4+ years until her passing.
Our family would like to express our gratitude to the many caregivers and health providers in Mom’s life. Especially those at Michener Extendicare, for the compassionate care they provided in her final chapter. We would also like to thank all our family and friends for their well wishes, condolences and support. We will miss our mom, but take great solace in knowing that her suffering is over. A memorial service will be held in Mallaig, AB at a later date to be determined.
