It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Margaret Marion Burkinshaw on January 1, 2022 following a brief illness (non-CoVID).
Marion was born in Consort, Alberta to John (Jack) Fisher and Laura MacDonald. She grew up as an only child as her Mom passed away when she was 21 months old. Marion and her Dad had moved to Loyalist, Alberta and she was raised by her Dad with help from their close friends and neighbors Arthur and Beatrice Newman, and their son Harry. While growing up she helped her Dad run the Fisher Groceries – Hardware Store in Loyalist. She enjoyed school and also loved to read. She moved to Red Deer in 1949 to attend high school and enjoyed attending many later reunions. Marion worked at the CIBC before meeting Earl through his taxi driving on September 12, 1952. They were married on September 4, 1954 and they were married for 61 years.
Marion’s favorite time in her life was when her children were little and they were all together. She stayed home to raise a family until her youngest went to school. She then worked as a health care aide in the West Park Nursing Home and also worked for many years in the Children’s Department at Hudson’s Bay. Marion was involved in the community. As all of her family played musical instruments – she was the Manager of the Red Deer Royals Community Band, and toured England and Scotland with them and her family. Marion enjoyed singing and was a member of the Red Deer Waskasoo’s and the Golden Circle Choirs. She also was a member of the Scottish Country Dance, Central Alberta Pioneer Old Timers, the Red Deer Museum, and was a member of the Sacred Heart Parish and CWL. Later on she had volunteered at the Red Deer Hospital ICU and Lab for almost 10 years.
Marion loved to travel with her family, and had driven from coast to coast across Canada visiting extended family in PEI, and through several States. Later on, she travelled with Earl to Australia and New Zealand (her favorite holiday), and also enjoyed cruising in the Panama Canal, the Caribbean, South America, and several ports in the U.S.
Marion will be fondly remembered by her son Phillip (Lois) of Spruce View and grandson Rob (Naomi) of Calgary and granddaughter Tracy (Joe) Douglas of Red Deer; daughter Deb and granddaughters Killa of Calgary and Erin (Brook) Doan of Innisfail; daughter-in-law Darleen of Stettler and grandson Michael (Kailee) of Red Deer; daughter Laura (Ed) Eschak of Fort Saskatchewan and granddaughters Nicole (Shawn) of Edmonton, Victoria (Cyle) of Port Clements, B.C., and Alexandra of Fort Saskatchewan; daughter Michelle (Wade) Zwicker of Edmonton and granddaughter Kaitlyn and grandson Steven of Edmonton; great-grandsons Parker, Spencer, and Pheonix, and great-granddaughters Feara, and Sakari. Marion was predeceased by her parents Laura (MacDonald) in 1936, her father Jack Fisher in 1966, her husband Earl in 2016, and her sons Dan in 2012, and David in 2021.
A Funeral Mass will be held at Sacred Heart Parish, Red Deer, Alberta on Wednesday January 12, 2022 at 11:00 A.M. (Family only due to CoVID).
Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to The Heart and Stroke Foundation, The Alberta Diabetes Foundation, or the Parkinson’s Association of Alberta.
