Kurtis Wayne Seher, known to us as Kurt, passed away peacefully in the early morning hours on June 30, 2025, at the age of 52 years, with his dad, mom, sister Kris, and brother-in-law Mel by his side. Kurt is finally home! Kurt was born in 1973, (sharing a birthday with his oldest great nephew, Wilson Lovell), to Gary and Judy, joining big sister Kristen. He was a quiet boy, never straying too far from his mom’s apron strings.
From an early age, Kurt discovered his love of sports, was a naturally gifted athlete and excelled in golf, basketball, hockey, volleyball, and track and field in Red Deer, AB where his family settled and where he grew up. Kurt left home at the age of 15 to pursue his dream of playing hockey at Father Athol Murray, in Wilcox, Saskatchewan, to become a “Hound”. At 16, he went to play with the Swift Current Broncos, then traded to the Seattle Thunderbirds. He was drafted in 1992 to the Boston Bruins, playing for the Providence Bruins, and lastly to the Charlotte Checkers, where he played for ten years, winning the Jack Riley Cup, and retiring there. Kurt’s jersey was also retired and now hangs in the arena where the Checkers currently play. Charlotte, North Carolina is home to his two daughters, Mayce and Evyn Seher. Kurt then settled into a career in home building as a Project Manager for the Cunnane Group and True Homes, building many lifelong friendships and business connections along the way. Kurt came back home to Alberta in January 2019, living in Lethbridge for a short period of time, before moving back in 2023 permanently to the city he grew up in.
Beyond his hockey career and career as a Project Manager, he never met a stranger; he made connections, from his buddies on the golf course to young fellas at the Red Deer Riggers games, he impacted people in a special way. Like his mom, Judy, he was an extrovert and a people person.
He is survived by his two daughters, Mayce and Evyn Seher, of Charlotte, North Carolina; parents Gary and Judy Seher; sister Kristen Seher-Klassen; brother-in-law Melvin Klassen; and special friend, whom he called “my girl”, Shannon, of Red Deer. Kurt is also survived by his nephew Tyler Brown, of Chicago, IL; niece Madisyn Lovell, her husband Joe, and great nephews, Wilson and Henry of Clive, AB; auntie Bea Seher of Medicine Hat, AB; cousin Denise Seher of Medicine Hat, AB; cousin Beau-J Seher, his wife Leanne, and their children Olivia and Benjamin, all of Calgary, AB; uncle Ron and auntie Barbara Spratt of Coquitlam, BC; cousin Melissa Anderson and her husband Layne, and their children Ireland and Berlin; uncle Wayne Bender and auntie Wendy of Calgary, AB; cousin Brad Bender, his wife Stephanie, and their children, Theo, Claire, and Alex; cousin RJ, his wife Michelle, and Sunny of Canmore, AB; and by many wonderful friends and former hockey mates.
Kurt was predeceased by his maternal grandparents, Floyd and Marjorie Bender; his paternal grandparents, Peter and Clara Seher; uncle Dennis Seher; and first cousin Gregory Spratt.
A celebration of Kurt’s life will be held at Crossroads Church, (SW corner of 32 St and highway 2), 38105 Range Road 275, Red Deer County, AB on Friday, July 11, 2025, at 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the Red Deer Dream Centre, 4616 – 50th Ave, Red Deer, Alberta, T4N 3Z6. Condolences to Kurt’s family may be emailed to meaningful@telus.net.
