It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of a beloved wife, mother, daughter, sister and friend. Kristin fought hard to stay with her loved ones, following the diagnosis of Acute Myeloid Leukemia in July of 2018. True to her nature, Kristin gave every challenge she faced her best fight, filled with grace, optimism and hope. Following a relapse in March 2020 and aggressive chemo, sadly, a remission was not achieved. Kristin accepted that palliative chemo may extend her time with us, but that was not to be. After many conversations with God, she found peace knowing the decision to stop treatment was an opportunity to love and live her best days to her earthly end. Kristin spent her final days surrounded by the love of “her men” – Shane and their sons, family, and friends in the care of the Red Deer Hospice.
She will be forever in the hearts of her loving husband and best friend, Shane and her beloved sons, Ward and Owen. Kristin is also survived by her parents: Ron & Deborah; siblings: Cameron, Allison, Darlene (Kevin); nephew Adam; her extended family, including aunts and uncles: Brenda, Sherry (Ralph), Donna (Tim), Shelby, Sandra (Brian), Collin (Barb); several cousins; and Grandmothers Lillian Kach and Gwen Lindstrom and family. Kristin was embraced by the Faechner family like one of their own. She was loved as a daughter by mother-in-law Joanne; brother-in-law Rodney (Susan); sister-in-law LeeAnne (Steve), nieces Kristen (Jason) and Maegan (Tom, Scarlett) and nephew Michael (Emma); and Shane’s extended family including aunts and uncles: Joyce (Ivan), Brenda (Gary), Lyndon (Wendy) and many cousins. Kristin was predeceased by her father-in-law, James Faechner; her grandparents, Clarice & Henri Van Der Meulen, Mel Lindstrom and Albert Kach.
Kristin grew up in Francis, Saskatchewan, supported and loved by family, childhood/lifelong friends Eulalia Klein and Tonya Chinski and their extended families: Pat Klein, Julie Klein, Reg & Adie Helfrick. She was active in the community through the Francis United Church, Francis 4-H Club, Youth groups, softball, dance, figure skating and various school sports. Kristin graduated from Sedley High School with the same classmates she had through her 12 years of school. She attended the University of Regina, graduated with a B.Sc. in Chemistry. Employment at Dow Chemicals led Kristin to relocate to Red Deer, her new hometown. Here she reconnected with Shane, the love of her life, after first meeting him on a co-op work term in Calgary while completing her university studies. As their family grew, Kristin decided to devote her time to the “loves of her life” – her boys, and to her community.
Kristin loved life, laughed lots and lived fully each God-given day. She has a far-reaching circle of friends who were touched by her love, friendship, and kindness. She loved a good book, nature hikes, animals, thunderstorms, rainbows, dragonflies, butterflies and her home province of Saskatchewan. Kristin was a committed volunteer, devoted to various community projects and active member of St. Elizabeth Seton School, the Parent Council, Studio Pilates and her Book Club. On July 17th, a fierce thunderstorm rolled through Red Deer and the most beautiful double rainbow told us that Kristin was home, safely in God’s arms and forever loved.
Thank you to Kristin’s many friends and neighbors who supported her and her family – especially Bridget Green whose loving care never wavered, to the staff of St. Elizabeth Seton School, to the caregivers at University of Alberta and Foothills Hospitals – especially Cathy who was a lifeline during isolation because of COVID-19, to Cassandra and all those at all Red Deer Hospice, to the Cancer Center at the Red Deer Regional Hospital – especially Dr. Prajapati and to the LivingStones Church Pastoral Team.
