Kenneth (Ken) Wells Williams
December 25, 1944 – October 6, 2025
Kenneth (Ken) Wells Williams passed away peacefully on October 6, 2025, at Red Deer Hospital with loved ones at his side. He was 80 years old.
Born on Christmas Day, 1944, in Montreal, Quebec, Ken was the eldest of three sons to Donald and Irene Williams. He spent his childhood on the family farm in the Great Bend District near Delburne, Alberta, where he developed a lifelong appreciation for hard work, teamwork, and the beauty of rural life. After leaving the farm, Ken made Red Deer his home for the remainder of his life.
Ken was predeceased by his parents, Donald and Irene; his wife, Greta (Dexter) Williams (1981); his brother Kevin (2010); and his beloved partner of 22 years, Judy Hovde (2025). He is lovingly remembered by his daughter Andrea and her husband Charlie; grandchildren Kenneth (his namesake), Amory, Zachary, Carston, and Cailin; brother Wesley and his wife Di; sister-in-law Lynn, wife of his late brother Kevin; Judy’s sons Mathew Hovde (Caress) and Stephen Hovde; as well as many cousins, nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
Ken was very proud of his 32-year career with TransAlta Utilities (formerly Calgary Power), starting as part of the Construction Crew in Red Deer before becoming a Journeyman Lineman. Known for his deep technical knowledge and steady leadership, Ken rose to the role of Foreman, guiding his crews with integrity, fairness, and an unwavering commitment to safety. He was highly respected for his work ethic, problem-solving skills, and dedication to his team. Ken’s sharp mind and passion for his profession earned him admiration across the company. After retiring from TransAlta, he enjoyed working alongside his brother Kevin on the family farm – a chapter he cherished deeply – and later as a Landman for AltaLink.
Ken had a big, infectious laugh and an even bigger heart. Never one to stay quiet for long, he was generous, humble, and always ready to lend a hand. He loved a good Sunday drive, and both he and Judy enjoyed travelling and discovering new places – from every corner of Alberta to the coasts of British Columbia and Nova Scotia. Though deeply devoted to the Prairies, he relished time spent near the ocean. Some of his favourite adventures included exploring the North with Judy on their epic Alaskan Highway road trip, as well as many memorable visits to Ontario and the Maritimes. One of Ken’s most meaningful journeys was a trip through the Panama Canal, fulfilling his wish to experience the engineering marvel firsthand.
Ken and Judy shared many happy years together, creating a warm and welcoming home filled with laughter, their well-tended gardens, and countless shared stories. He was a devoted partner, a loving father and grandfather, and a steadfast friend to many.
This past year brought immense challenges, including the loss of his beloved Judy and a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Through it all, Ken faced each day with grace, humour, and gratitude – often reminding those around him that he had enjoyed “80 great years.” His final months were filled with meaningful reconnections, family time, and quiet reflection – all the “silver linings” he treasured deeply.
Ken will be remembered for his big laugh, strength, loyalty, and the love he gave so freely. His family and friends take comfort in knowing that he is now at peace, reunited with those who went before him.
A Memorial Service to celebrate Ken’s life will be held on Saturday, November 15th, at 11:00 a.m. at Sunnybrook United Church, 12 Stanton Street, Red Deer, AB.
