On January 25, 2022 Ken Bickford passed away after a short illness at the Red Deer Hospital with his loving children at his side. He lived his full 93 years in the Red Deer area having farmed east of Red Deer in the Springvale District near his childhood home. He was married to Patricia in 1951 and she survives him. The couple built a farming operation and, while it was not easy at all times, they were successful in their efforts. In addition to his wife Pat, Ken is survived by his daughter, Twyla Supervich (Brian) of Edmonton and his son Aubrey Bickford (Bonnie) of Red Deer. He leaves to mourn his passing five grandchildren – Shaun, Chad (Lacey), Krista (Jesse), Caitlin (Nathan) and Caleb (Jenna) and three great grandchildren – Bella, Nicholas and Maxwell. Ken was a hardworking man who was devoted to creating a thriving farming business and one of his greatest joys was that his farming legacy lives on through his son, Aubrey and his wife Bonnie. Ken was a strong community member and a good neighbor who was ready to assist others when he was able to do so.
Later in his life, Ken and Pat moved to Red Deer but he stayed involved in the farm until his health prevented him from doing what he loved. Busy harvest times with lots of friends offering help and long hours of productive hard work were some of his most enjoyable times. Throughout his life he enjoyed travelling and he was also a welcoming host who loved visiting, especially when playing cards were available. He loved playing Bridge and enjoyed being a member of a Bridge club until very recently.
One of Ken’s most memorable qualities was his storytelling. He would often share stories about his life lessons with others, particularly his family. On many occasions he was asked to be the Master of Ceremonies at special events because of this gift.
Although he never felt he was truly skilled at sports he did enjoy them. In his younger years he often took part in the Red Deer Farmer’s Bonspiel and later in life he began playing golf. He often commented that he probably would never be competitive at golf but would be ‘hard to ever beat’ with a grain shovel in his hand.
Ken and Pat Bickford were strong supporters of the Zion Presbyterian Church in the Willowdale community. Ken was very happy to see the Church moved from its location near where he farmed to the Sunnybrook Farm Museum just a short time ago. After their move to Red Deer they attended the Knox Presbyterian church in Red Deer where Ken remained a member for the rest of his life.
Ken was predeceased by his parents, Aubrey and Jenny Bickford, and his three brothers – Earl, Glenn and Tom and his two sisters – Faye and Betty.
A celebration of Ken’s life well lived will occur at a later date. If desired, donations in his name can be made to the Alberta Alzheimer’s Society or a charity of one’s choice.
