August 11, 1927 – August 28, 2024
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Joseph Leo Risling (Joe) of Red Deer, Alberta, who left us on August 28, 2024, at the age of 97. Born in Prelate, Saskatchewan, on August 11, 1927, Joseph lived a life rich in love, dedication, spirituality and cherished moments.
Adeline, the love of Joe’s life, and his devoted wife of 74 years, survives him and will continue to be a source of inspiration to the family just as their remarkable partnership was. Their enduring love and devotion was recognized by all who knew them but was especially inspiring to their children. Joe’s family was his greatest joy, and he leaves behind a legacy of love in his four children: Edward (Glenda), Brian (Cindy), Marci (Gilles), and David (Eleanor).
Joe was a proud grandfather to twelve grandchildren: Derek, Mathew, and Tanya; Michael (Carrie), Richard (Becky), Chad (Kaila), Adam (Taralyn) and Amanda (Travis); Natalie (Chad) and Chantal; Mychaela (Adam) and Miranda. His legacy extends to eleven great-grandchildren and 5 great great-grandchildren, each a testament to the warmth and guidance he offered throughout his life.
He was predeceased by his father Jacob, his mother Elizabeth, and his siblings: Edward, Elvin, Ronald, and Lambert Risling, as well as his sisters Mary Rassmusen and Molly Roy. He is survived by his sister Katherine, his brothers Jack and Roy (Diane).
For decades Joe owned and operated a service station and trucking business in North Battleford, Saskatchewan. In North Battleford Joe was dedicated and focused on his marriage and raising his family. He was also very involved in operating his business and worked hard to provide a high standard of service. In addition, he was an active member of the North Battleford Community, donating time to the church and serving charitable organizations including the Knights of Columbus and Meals on Wheels.
Joe and Adeline built and loved a lake cottage at Little Loon Lake in Saskatchewan. The family, including all the grandchildren made many wonderful memories at the lake cabin. Joe and Adeline sold their cabin and moved to Red Deer in 2009.
Joe loved to visit and socialize, making many lifelong friendships in every community he was a part of. Joe and Adeline welcomed family and friends into their home wherever they were residing; pouring a coffee, a glass of wine or other refreshment where Joe often demonstrated genuine pleasure to reconnect. Joe enjoyed great conversations and contributed a wit that had family and friends looking forward to their next visit.
We deeply appreciate the compassionate care provided to Joe/Dad. Our thanks to Dr. Odendahl, all the doctors and specialists who Joe/Dad saw in the past year, the AHS Home Care and Palliative Care Nurses, all of the Staff at Optima Inglewood, the EMS personnel who responded whenever needed in the final week at home and the Nursing and Care staff at the Red Deer Hospice. Your support made a significant difference particularly in Joe/Dad’s final days. In our eyes, you are all angels.
Funeral services will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, September 7th, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 6 McMillan Avenue, Red Deer, Alberta. Following the service, a light lunch will be served.
