John 'Norman' Bergdal

Norm was born to Helga and John Bergdal in Red Deer, Alberta on August 23, 1932. He passed away peacefully in Red Deer on April 19th, 2021 at the age of 88. He attended all of his schooling in Red Deer, graduating at LTHS in 1950.
After graduation, he was a volunteer fireman, than went to Calgary to work at various jobs until he joined Gulf Oil as a surveyor, doing most of his work in South East Alberta and Saskatchewan.
In 1955 Norm returned to Red Deer and joined the Red Deer Fire Department. His badge was #3, second only to his father and Fire Chief. Throughout his career he climbed the ranks and became Deputy Fire Chief, the position he held until he retired in 1987.
After retirement Norm and wife Lea purchased their retirement home in the fall of 1987 and shortly after, the packed up to spend the winters in Arizona, which they did for 17 years.
Norm loved sports and became a superb skier. He helped organize Red Deer Ski Patrol and became a registered ski instructor. He helped to design the first Canyon Ski Resort and was very involved in creating the Nancy Green Ski League for our young skiers. He organized ski competitions for his league to compete throughout Alberta. Many a trophy was won under his guidance. They all made him very proud.
Upon retirement Norman took up golf. He entered many tournaments, came home with prizes, trophies (and golf hats). He also enjoyed camping, motor biking and fishing with family.
Norm was predeceased by his parents and his sister Bernice, San Diego. He is survived by his loving wife, Lea for 64 years, his daughter Lori Nicholson (David) of Red Deer and their children Kyle of Australia, Joel (Bri) of Calgary, son Rob (Carole) of Creston, BC and his son Derek of Calgary. His favorite niece and nephews, Pattie Dalsin, Calgary, Brett Adams, Cochrane, and Ernie Newans, Kelowna, BC. His brother- in- law Dennis Baldwin, Kelowna, BC, sister-in-law, Elfrieda LaLonde, Calgary, AB. As well as three nieces in the USA, several cousins and many wonderful friends.
Norm was our family mentor and anchor. We mourn with heavy hearts. He leaves us with great memories that will be everlasting.
