John Louis “Johnny” Dunn
May 30th, 1936 to August 29th, 2022
On August 29th, 2022, our beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great papa passed away peacefully with his family by his side at the age of 86 years. John will lovingly be remembered by his wife of 63 years, Lori (nee Peters), son Kevin (special friend Holly), daughters; Linda (Scott) McDonald, Julie (Bobby), and Michelle (Sylvain) Roussel. He will be greatly missed by his five grandchildren; Lindsay (Brandon) Verhagen, Preston, Jeff (Meaghan) McDonald, Nathaniel and Jonathan Roussel as well as four great grandchildren; Ella-Grace, Scarlett, and Aspyn Verhagen, and Daisy McDonald. Johnny is survived by his sisters; Margie LeClair, Sandra Goulet, Shiela (Glen) McGhie, Laverne (Gary) Mahar, Dianne (Jimmy) Hambly, Cindy (George Nelson) Hogue and additional cherished family members through marriage. Now he will be reunited with his departed parents Seymour and Julia Dunn, and brothers Ray, Frank, Fred, George, Jimmy and Willie, and brother in law Paul Goulet.
Those who knew Johnny know what a kind, generous, and selfless man he was. His love for his family was his greatest gift. Johnny loved all sports but his greatest passion was golf. His most treasured golf partners were his wife and his son. If he wasn’t on the course he could be found watching the Golf Channel in his comfy chair with his sweetheart Lori.
Johnny spent most of his working life in the Canadian Air Force stationed at numerous bases across Canada and briefly in the United States. After serving 25 years he retired and worked at Bowden Federal Penitentiary for 12 years as a Correctional Officer. His retirement saw many trips to the States with Lori, and summers spent golfing at Lacombe Golf and Country Club and more recently Riverbend Golf Club.
Johnny loved old time and fiddling music. He never missed an opportunity to pull Lori out on the dance floor. Music was always a part of family gatherings and Johnny could often be found tapping his feet and playing the ‘spoons’. Many evenings were spent playing Euchre with family and typically winning with his number one partner Lori.
Everyone who met Johnny and spent time with him was better for it. He will live on in our hearts and in the memories he made with each one of us. Rest easy Dad until we meet again.
A funeral mass will be held on Wednesday, September 7th at 1:00pm at St. Mary’s Church, 6 McMillan Avenue, Red Deer, Alberta. Internment and luncheon to follow.
Our family is sincerely grateful to the staff of the Peter Lougheed Hospital and the Foothills Hospital (Tertiary Rehab Unit and Neurology Unit) for their compassionate care.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation or a charity of your choice.
