Johanna Nielsen, 76, passed away in Red Deer on Saturday, June 25th. Nana was a beloved wife, mom, grandmother, sister, and friend to many. We will miss her immensely, but find comfort in knowing she is now with her Lord in heaven.
Born on March 6, 1946, in Enschede, the Netherlands to Johannes and Antonia Fikkert, Nana, the oldest of 7 children immigrated with her family to Canada in 1950. She grew up in Sylvan Lake and Red Deer where she met her husband of 57 years, Larry Nielsen. Not long after being married, Larry and JoAnn moved to Morrin where they spent 55 years being part of the community and raising their four sons (Jamie, John, Steve, and Dan)
The “snowbird” life began in 1994 when Larry and JoAnn started spending their winters in Needles, CA developing a mobile home park with Mel (Larry’s brother) and wife, Fran. In 2008, they sold the mobile home park and bought a home in Phoenix where they have been returning each year to enjoy the winters with newfound friends and hosting family visitors.
Nana’s funeral will be held at 12:00 pm on Thursday, June 30th at the Community Hall in Morrin, Alberta. To view the funeral online please visit Nana Nielsen’s Facebook.
