Joan Elaine Bender, 78, of Red Deer, Alberta, passed away peacefully on February 14, 2026.
Joan grew up in Waldeck, SK with her parents Henry and Eva, and her siblings Earl, Carol, Marlene, Gerald, John, Ronald, and Richard.
Joan was married to Wayne Bender, and together they shared many years of life and family. Together, they raised Sheldon and Dawn (Oral), and she was a loving mother. She was a proud grandmother to Cole and Amber (Chris) and great grandmother to Allison, Cadence, and Elizabeth, cherishing each of them deeply.
She was predeceased by her husband Wayne, her son Sheldon, and her grandson Cole.
Joan was known for her strong business mind and exceptional work ethic. She managed Shell stores in Fort McMurray, where she earned respect for her leadership, and ability to run a successful operation. She approached both business and life with determination and capability.
Outside of work, Joan loved gardening and spent countless hours tending her large flower and vegetable gardens. She felt most at peace outdoors. Joan also loved cooking — her kitchen was often filled with warmth, delicious meals, and gatherings of family and friends. She had a special gift for cooking for large groups, ensuring no one ever left her table hungry. An avid reader, she could often be found immersed in a good book, always eager to learn and explore new stories.
Joan will be remembered for her strength, her love of family, and the steady presence she provided to those around her. Her legacy lives on in the family she nurtured, the gardens she planted, and the many meals and memories she shared.
A service will be held at Eventide Funeral Home on Friday, February 20th at 2:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Red Deer Hospice Society or the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
