It is with great sadness, that we announce the passing of our beloved Mom, Omi and Super-Omi, Ingrid Schmidt.
Ingrid Schmidt (nee Müller) of Red Deer passed away in the early morning hours of May 30th, surrounded by her two loving daughters and granddaughter Sabrina, after a valiant battle with cancer.
Ingrid was born in Berlin, Germany, on Feb 13th, 1935 to Franz and Margaret Müller, as their only daughter of 6 children.
She was predeceased by her loving husband of 44 years, Arnold Schmidt, as well as her parents Franz and Margarete, brothers Dieter, Gerhard and Winfried. Ingrid was survived by her daughters Brigitte (John) Anderson, Petra De St. Germain; her granddaughters Sabrina (Dennis), Marie (David) and Natalie (Glen); her great grandchildren Erich, Liam, Garrison, Hunter and Rheya as well as brothers Michael (Dagi) and Norbert (Yvonne) and many nieces and nephews.
She apprenticed in one of the largest department stores in Berlin and worked there for many years. She then took a position as a caretaker, overseeing the maintenance of a residential complex, housing British Military Families, which were stationed in Berlin, as part of the Allied Forces. Many of the young families, away from home, adopted her as their foster mom, grandma, friend and mentor. She was marriage counsellor, social worker as well as giving useful advice in child care to new moms, all while raising her own teenage daughters and providing a loving home for her family.
After retirement in 1995, the boxes were packed, and Ingrid and her husband followed their daughters to Canada. This is when they bought their first and only home in Red Deer, and where she built her life around her community and friends, after her husband had passed in 1999.
Ingrid enjoyed numerous years serving her community as a volunteer at St Mary’s Parish, helping out at funeral lunches and during church services. She was also an active member of the Catholic Women’s League (CWL) for an example baking cookies for the School Lunch Program, for children in need. Following her German heritage, she joined the German Canadian Club of Red Deer, where she enjoyed activities, and helping out at functions when needed. Over 20 years, she loved getting together weekly with the same group of friends, sharing embroidery, knitting and each other’s company.
Ingrid was a very kind and gentle soul, who had a passion for life, finding beauty in everything and everyone. She was a wonderful mother who enriched our lives and made beautiful warm memories for her family. She loved her family more than anything, which meant many trips up the highway to Edmonton, for birthdays, anniversaries, Christmas parties, choir concerts or any other special occasion. She was the foundation and heartbeat of our family and will be missed every day.
The outpouring of love, care and concern by many friends was truly appreciated. A memorial to celebrate Ingrid’s life will be held at a later date.
Due to the current circumstances, we want to ensure we take every necessary precaution in protecting our loved ones and friends. In keeping with provincial mandates only 50 attendees are able to be part of the funeral service by invitation only. You can join us in celebrating Ingrid’s life by participating in a live webcasting of the service on Monday – June 08th – at 1pm (MST).
