Hugh Montford MacDonald
1928 – 2024
Hugh MacDonald passed away on November 9, 2024, in Red Deer at age 96 after a couple of years of declining health.
Hugh was born in Lacombe on March 9, 1928, to Nellie and Giles MacDonald. The family then moved to Red Deer for a spell then finally settled in Edmonton. In his youth Hugh was an exceptional athlete and loved playing hockey and football with his high school buddies. After completing high school, he became a structural engineer owning his own business and working on projects in Alberta, British Columbia and throughout the world. Hugh enjoyed travelling, reading a good novel and loved poetry, even reciting poems word for word. In his later years he stayed active by jogging and going for long walks. Hugh moved to Red Deer in 2022 to be closer to his son Allan and resided at Timberstone Mews until his passing.
Hugh is survived by his children Patti (Merv) Bell, Hugh John (Antionette) MacDonald, Frances (Steve) Brodie, Allan (Tina) MacDonald, his brother Fred (Maryanne) MacDonald, many grandchildren and great grandchildren. He is also survived by his second wife Olive MacDonald, stepchildren, Steve, Vanessa and Alex. Hugh is predeceased by his son and daughter-in-law Jim and Annie MacDonald and his sisters Theresa Hergott and Pat Hough and his first wife Fredrica MacDonald.
A big thank you to Dr. Rattan and the amazing staff at Timberstone Mews in Red Deer, for his care over the last couple of years.
A celebration of life will be held on Friday, May 23rd at 10:30 at St. John’s Evangelist Catholic Church in Edmonton followed by a luncheon in the church hall.
