Hugh James Shearer of Red Deer, Alberta passed away at the Red Deer Hospice and went to be with his Lord and Savior Christ Jesus on October 16, 2018 at the age of 77 years.
Hugh James Shearer was born in 1940 on a farm just outside of Earl Grey, Saskatchewan. He was a man who was loved and respected by many. He was a family man who loved Carol, his wife of 50 years, and each one of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He had a special understanding of each of them individually. His stories touched everyone he spoke to, and those conversations will be missed but seldom forgotten.
Hugh was a veteran of five years of service with the Royal Canadian Air Force and trained as a radar operator and technician specializing in airborne radar and aircraft electronics. After his honorable discharge in 1962 with a rank of Leading Air Craftsman, he went on to use his varied acquired skills in civilian life. He worked as an electronics parts clerk, and then for CN Rail as a teletype mechanic and a typewriter repairman, a parts man for John Deere, prior to being a salesman in Regina, Saskatchewan as a radio and electronic supply store counter clerk. Other jobs included being a road logger operator driver for Dresser Atlas, Chevron, and bulk operator for Petro Canada. He worked as a store man, a purchase agent, a cab driver, a hydraulics mechanic, shipper/receiver, and retired in Red Deer from Peavey Industries as a retail and warranty clerk of Peavey Mart in 1998.
Hugh and Carol married in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, and moved around as they began their family. They lived in Prince Albert, Edmonton, Red Deer, Swan Hills, Slave Lake, and back to Red Deer again. They have many friends and, since trusting in Christ Jesus as their personal savior, they have enjoyed fellowship with other believers and opened their home to share many meals with new acquaintances or strangers becoming fast friends. Though a working man of modest means, it never stopped Hugh from helping anyone he could or showing kindness and generosity in spite of joking about his Scottish frugality while doing so. His laughter and love will be missed.
Hugh was predeceased by his father William Ramage Shearer, his mother Caroline Edithwolfe Shearer, his sisters Delores Shearer and Doreen Sieman, and his brother Gordon Shearer. He and Carol raised three children: a son Michael Shearer of Slave Lake, Alberta; a daughter Sheila Hollier (nee Shearer) and her husband Mel of Grande Prairie, Alberta; and another daughter Joan Baker (nee Shearer) and her husband James of Red Deer, Alberta. Hugh had eight grandchildren: Kailey, Wesley, Erik, Katrina, Jessie, Kyle, Natasha, and Carlea, and four great-grandchildren: Ryland, Emily, Olivia, and Caleb. Hugh’s prayer and hope was that each of his family members will experience a dynamic personal relationship with Jesus as their Savior and enable them all to be reunited joyously in heaven.
A Memorial Service celebrating Hugh’s life will be conducted at Liberty Christian Assembly, 6315 Horn Street, Red Deer, AB on Sunday, October 21, at 3 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Red Deer Hospice in honour of the excellent care they have and do provide. Condolences for Hugh’s family can be emailed to meaningful@telus.net.
