Hope Wegner
Hope Wegner passed away peacefully in her sleep at her residence on Saturday, July 12th at the age of 95.
Born on the homestead, outside of Porcupine Plain, Saskatchewan on October 7th, 1929 Maxine Ramona HOPE Hayunga was a fun loving and spirited girl who, according to her dad, was never going to be a “farmer’s wife”.
True to George Hayunga’s prediction, Hope moved to Regina when she was 17 years old after high school and began a career working as a telephone operator– a perfect job for a young woman who loved to talk to people.
She met Arthur Wegner in 1951 after substituting on a friend’s bowling team in Regina. They were married 6 months later on July 14, 1951 in Regina. Two years after marrying, Hope & Art started their family in Red Deer with a daughter, and in a five and a half years had four children and a very busy family life.
Together for over 65 years, Hope and Art enjoyed winter holidays in Arizona, playing bridge and spending time with family and friends in Saskatchewan. During Art’s time with Chrysler they lived in Edmonton, Red Deer and Windsor, Ontario. Hope maintained friendships from coast to coast in Canada and with relatives worldwide over the years, first with letters and then via Facebook and emails. She valued her Hayunga family history and enjoyed being an amateur genealogist for our family in Canada and beyond, particularly with the help of the internet in later years.
Predeceased by her husband Art, and her sons Richard and Wayne (Janet), Hope leaves behind her youngest son Neil (Ida) in Red Deer and daughter Pat (John) in Ontario as well as many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
According to Hope’s wishes there will be no service after cremation.
Many thanks to the staff at Timberstone Mews for the care they showed her during her years residing there.
