Hop Mui Chan, beloved mother and grandmother of the Tse Family, passed away on March 18, 2025, surrounded by her loving family at the remarkable age of 94.
Hop Mui was born in Chaozhou, China, on June 4, 1930 and moved to Tsim Sha Tsui, Hong Kong, in 1952 at the age of 22 with her late husband, Henry Tse. After raising her three sons in Hong Kong, she immigrated to Red Deer, AB, as a widow in 1994 at the age of 64 to be closer to her sons.
Hop Mui was revered in her community of Tsim Sha Tsui. She was friends with both police and mobsters alike. Her strong, independent personality was widely known and respected. Her charisma, charm, relentlessness, and tenacity will be forever ingrained in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
In Hong Kong, Hop Mui owned and operated a convenience store with her husband. Years later, they ventured into the antique business. Before moving to Red Deer, she closed their family business, bringing along her favorite pieces from her store.
In Red Deer, Hop Mui assisted her sons in their businesses, Le Chateau and Canton Kitchen, while also lovingly contributing to the care and development of her four grandchildren.
Hop Mui was the cherished matriarch of her family. She will be remembered as a hustling, determined, and devoted mother to her three sons, and a doting grandmother to her four grandchildren.
Hop Mui is survived by her son Benny (Pat), daughters-in-law Paula and Fanny, and grandchildren Tim (May), Albert (Yoona), Deanna, and Tiffany (Caleb).
She was predeceased by her husband, Henry Tse, and her sons, Alex and Ben.
The Tse Family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the Wing Kei Care Centre’s Adult Day Program and The Peter Lougheed Centre Care Team for their compassionate care and support.
