Helen Georgia Grayston

It is with great sadness that we announce that Helen Georgia Grayston died peacefully in her sleep on Wednesday, August 10, 2022 at her home in Red Deer, Alberta. She leaves her husband, Don Grayston, her sons; Sheldon (Margo), Keith (Tannis), Garland (Carrie) and sister, Sonja Frieirmuth. She also had eight beloved grandchildren; Breanne, Hailey, Jodi, Cole, Max, Kellen, Jake and Jeremy as well as five greatgrandchildren, Rowan, Ella, Vonn, Ace and Remy. She was predeceased by her parents, sisters, Doris Antil, (Don Antil), Thelma Trent and brother-in-law, Al Frieimuth.
Helen was born in Ordale, Saskatchewan on February 28, 1934. She grew up in a rural area near Shellbrook, Saskatchewan. Helen always had an interest in education and went on to study in Saskatoon graduating with a degree in education in 1966. Her work history as an educator saw her committed to her students and always had a passion for imparting the importance of hard work and dedication to a life long commitment of learning.
Helen and Don Grayston were married on November 12, 1954. They raised their three boys in various small Saskatchewan communities and eventually settled in Yellowknife, NT in 1968. Together they enjoyed family life in Yellowknife, supporting their boys’ sports endeavors and involving themselves in the community with volunteer service, participation in a variety of social activities including bridge club and square dancing. She enjoyed playing a variety of card games with her grandchildren and was interested in their learning and development. Helen was a devoted member of the Anglican church and volunteered her time selflessly. Helen and Don were able to travel and winter away in Arizona eventually retiring in Red Deer, Alberta.
Helen was sharp witted, exacting and fair. She taught many a student about the value of hard work, discipline and sharing. She wanted the best for her family and worked hard to provide for them both in and outside of the family home. She was a crafter, reader and disciplined person. Helen was an extraordinary baker and cook. She enjoyed a puzzle, playing a game and was always willing to flex her “mind muscle”. She had a smile for everyone, was inclusive will be sorely missed by all who knew her.
A funeral service is planned for Saturday, August 13, 2022 at 3:00 pm at the Anglican Church of St. Luke at 4929-54th Street, Red Deer, AB. Coffee/tea and snacks to follow.
