January 21, 1928 – May 13, 2022
Harry passed away peacefully in Red Deer, Alberta on Friday, May 13, 2022.
Harry was born on January 21, 1928 in Kobryn, Poland (now Kobryn, Belarus). Along with his parents and older brother John, Harry arrived in Canada in 1930. The family settled as homesteaders in the Evansburg area where Harry and his seven siblings (John, Elizabeth, Helena, Katie, Bill, Alex, and Annie) were raised. Harry studied to become a teacher and began his teaching career at Park Court, a one-room country school. After many teaching assignments throughout northern and central Alberta, he eventually settled in Red Deer.
Harry and his wife Joyce were married in 1959 and welcomed their son Terry in 1960. Harry worked as a teacher and school administrator in Red Deer from 1960 until he retired in 1985. His schools included Central Junior High and Oriole Park Elementary, where he finished his teaching career as principal.
Harry was active in community activities, frequently volunteering for events like the Calgary Olympics and the Brier in Red Deer. As a long-time member of the Kiwanis Club, he was the Lt. Governor for a term and also worked on many community projects in support of organizations such as the Red Deer Hospital, the Hospice, the Golden Circle, and the Twilight Home Foundation. Harry also served as Chairman of the Red Deer City Recreation Board and on the Red Deer Games Foundation.
Harry was an avid sportsman, participating as a player and/or coach in baseball, hockey, football, and basketball in his younger years, and as a runner in his later years. Harry was also a lifelong curler, avid golfer (being very proud of his six holes-in-one) and bridge player. He also participated in the Alberta Games and Alberta Senior Games in several sports (track, golf, and bridge).
Harry is survived by his loving wife, Joyce; his son, Terry (Helen); and his grandchildren, Kathrine and Christopher. He is also survived by his siblings, Helena, Katie, Bill, and Annie; and his sister-in-law, April. Harry was predeceased by his parents, Prokop and Parazka; his stepmother, Mary; and his siblings, John, Elizabeth, and Alex (April).
In accordance with Harry’s wishes, no memorial service will be held. Cremation has taken place and Harry will be laid to rest at Red Deer Cemetery.
