Gregory Lee Meachem, aged 71, passed away gracefully on Thursday, April 18th, 2024 at the Red Deer Regional Hospital with his loving family by his side. Greg fought bravely and never lost his great sense of humour throughout his struggle.
Greg was born on May 21st, 1952 to Maurice and Merle Meachem in Arborfield, SK and was raised in Creighton, SK and Flin Flon, MB.
Following grade school, Greg held jobs in construction, mining and maintenance before deciding to pursue a career as a sports writer in the late 1970’s.
Upon graduating from the SAIT journalism program in 1978, Greg wrote for the Strathmore Standard, The Lloydminster Times, and in 1981 he joined The Red Deer Advocate where he remained for 35 years. Some highlights of Greg’s career include covering the 1988 Winter Olympics, travelling to Halifax for The 1990 World Figure Skating Championships and reporting on the Red Deer Rebels from their birth in 1992 on. Following retirement from an award winning career at The Red Deer Advocate, he accepted a freelance position writing for the Red Deer Rebels’ website. Greg’s easy-going manner made him a favourite with his colleagues wherever he worked.
Greg embraced life and cherished time spent with his wife Brenda, his family, and friends. He spent many hours cheering on his two grandchildren while watching their sporting events. He was also a knowledgeable hockey fan and an avid golfer. He was a precious gem of a man whose star will shine on and on forever.
Greg will be deeply missed by his wife Brenda, children Kelsey (Evan) and Dallas, grandchildren Bodhi and Saffron, brothers Terry (Cecily) and Leslie, sister Valerie (Raymond) and Mother Merle as well many nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.
Preceding him in death were sisters Adele and Cassie, brother Danny and father Maurice.
Greg’s family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to the caring and supportive staff in the Red Deer Regional Hospital’s ICU for the wonderful care he received.
