Gregory James Hanson, a lifelong local resident of Red Deer, passed away unexpectedly at his home on December 5th, 2023, at the age of 76.
Greg was born in Red Deer to Robert Michael Hanson “Jeff” and Pearl Rose Hanson (nee Raudebaugh) on September 18th, 1947. He was pre-deceased by his father in 2010 and his mother in 1982. He will be greatly missed by daughters Laura Lee, and Tammy (Dean), and sons Craig and Joseph; former wife Patricia; grandchildren Ryan, Chelsey, Tiffany, Kurtis, Shyanne, Zachery, Autumn, Avery, Ryder, and Rylee; great-grandchildren Aurora, Aiden, Mazie and Aliza; sister Patricia (Fred), brothers Wayne (Elizabeth), Fred (Linda), and Jeffrey (Gillian); former brother and sister in law, Roger and Judy and sister-in-law Penny; numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, extended family members and countless friends.
The river spoke to Greg as he grew up fishing and jumping off the train bridge in the fast-moving Red Deer River with his brothers. In fact, he taught his kids, grandkids, great-grandkids, nieces, and nephews to fish, many of whom continue that passion today. He loved the outdoors and took numerous memorable camping trips with his family. Greg had a select group of close friends that he grew up with since his youth who will feel a void in his loss. He built a beautiful acreage and relished the peace and quiet of country life with his horses. He was a no-nonsense guy that would let you know what he thought if you had earned it. Greg had true grit that not only was reflected in an intimidating presence but created instant respect.
Greg had an undeniably strong work ethic, which he relied upon to provide his family in careers in meat cutting, ranching and oilfield. He started G.H. Oilfield Sales, which he successfully ran for over 30 years until the day he died. When he was persuaded to take a break, he enjoyed taking a relaxing and well-earned vacation in a tropical place. He has now earned his eternal rest in his Heavenly home. He will be respectfully remembered and greatly missed by all who were lucky enough to know him. He was one of one.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Ridgewood Community Hall (37160 Range Road 10, Red Deer County) on Saturday, December 23rd at 11 am.
Memorial donations can be made to Veterans Voices of Canada.
