GILLIES – Roderick (Rod)
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Rod Gillies, with his family by his side on Wednesday June 18th, at the age of 66. Born in 1959, Rod started his life in Northern Alberta, moving to Saskatchewan when he was young, then finally residing in Red Deer for the remainder of his life.
Rod was passionate in both his personal interests, and in his professional life. He enjoyed a variety of hobbies, including building and racing RC cars, photography, board games, camping, and volunteering. Tinkering from a young age, Rod developed a passion for the automotive industry. Excelling in various aspects of the industry, Rod became a GM Grand Master Technician and was well respected in the area. In 2004, he opened his own automotive shop, where he built up a loyal customer base. His door was always open for conversation and a coffee. Rod forged many lasting friendships and connections due to his extensive knowledge and willingness to help others.
Family was central in Rod’s life, and he often prioritized their needs above his own. From a young age, he had a natural ability for how things worked, frequently disassembling household items to explore their mechanics, which eventually led him to a career in the automotive industry. In addition to his technical skills, Rod was also known for his artistic side, capturing special moments through photography at gatherings and events. His contributions to the RC car community included helping to establish the first RC car track at Red Deer’s Three Mile Bend park in the 80’s, showcasing his commitment to both his hobbies and his community. Rod was enthusiastic about music, appreciating a wide variety of genres within his endless collection, though he often preferred music from the 50’s to the 80’s. Among all the music he enjoyed, he did have a few favourites he often played: Old Time Rock & Roll by Bob Seger, Baby Elephant Walk by Henry Mancini, and Rock Around the Clock by Bill Haley. Rod proudly supported his sons in playing a couple of his favourite instruments, the trumpet and tenor saxophone. Always enjoying the concerts they performed in.
He was predeceased by his parents, Arnold and Jean (nee Richards) Gillies; his brother James (Jim) Gillies; in-laws John and Mildred Ackerman; sister in-law Shelley Schafer; brother in-laws, Ed Schafer, and Bill Bailes; nephew-in-law Chad Bailes, and Rod’s guardian angel dog Shadow.
Rod is survived and mourned by the love of his life, soulmate, and best friend Jenny (Jennifer) Ackerman of 43 years, two treasured sons Evan and Owen, and his guardian angel dog Lucky. He is also survived by his two caring sisters, Cathy (Don) Stone and Sue (Jim) Bradley; his supportive extended family, Frances, Wade and Valerie, Jeff and Marnie, Candace and Barry, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and many loyal friends.
Rod was known for his easygoing nature, and for his unwavering kindness towards everyone he encountered. His passing has left a void in the hearts of his family, friends, and many more who had the opportunity to meet and know him. He persevered through his last stages of life with courage and strength throughout the course of his complex respiratory illnesses.
The family would like to thank the dedicated care teams in the ICU at RDRH and FMC, in addition to the STARS team.
The day now done, the sun now set, our memories with you we won’t forget. Leaving a wrench in our hearts, but forever grateful for the lifetime of love and guidance you’ve given us. Sweet Dreams to our Beautiful Man – Rod & Dad XO ☘️
Respecting Rod’s wishes, no service will be held.
A loving father, so good and kind,
No friend on earth like him we find.
With all his heart he gave his best,
May he have his eternal rest.
His life was full of kindly deeds,
A helping hand to all in need.
A pleasant smile, a heart of gold,
No better father this world could hold.
