Florence Yvette Surgenor
May 2, 1923 – June 22, 2024
It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to Florence Yvette Surgenor (nee Lemieux). Florence passed away at the age of 101, on Saturday, June 22 with family by her side in Red Deer, Alberta. Florence was born on May 2, 1923 in Coderre, Saskatchewan.
Florence was predeceased by her husband of 55 years, John (Jack) Alexander, her sisters Marie-Anne Rondeau, and Blanche Demers and many relatives and friends.
Mom was a caring, kind and generous woman that helped so many people throughout her life. Above all Florence was a Mom, raising and supporting her 3 boys and 3 girls: Melvin (Lorna), Ron (Claire), Marg (Ernie), Laura, Maureen (Jeff), John (Glenna) and a loving Grandmother and Great Grandmother of Ryan (Lily), Glenn (Jacquie), Andrew (Mae), Mark (Tammy), Jeffrey, Jennifer (Dan), Oliver (Tammy), Sara (Chris), Christopher, Emily (Ryan), Justin, Matthew, Adam, Tyler, Katie, Kayla, Eric, Natalie and Olive.
Mom was involved in the community, especially through St. Mary’s Church and for The Clothing Bank in Red Deer, dedicating countless hours to helping others.
Mom cared about injustice and suffering in the world and contributed to the support of many underprivileged children starting in the 1960’s and continuing to present day.
Throughout her life, Mom enjoyed crafts, sewing, gardening, and was especially known for her cooking and baking – including her peanut cake recipe which is a family favourite!
Mom had incredible resilience and independence. Her strength has helped her live through the ups and downs in her joyful and generous life. She will be deeply missed by family and friends.
The family is sincerely grateful to the staff of Timberstone Mews for their care of our Mom for the last 3 1/2 years.
