Evan Hawkings passed peacefully from this life on November 18, 2021, at his home in The Hamlets in Red Deer County. Predeceased by his loving wife of 65 years, Nora in 2011, Evan will be fondly remembered by his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Harry (Lucille) and their family – Jesse (Jeanie) and Jane (Steven) & Aidan; Marian (Murray +2010) and their family – Stuart (Pearl) & Michael & Maxwell and Lori (Chad) & Paige & Matthew; Daniel; and Patrick (Laura) and Laura’s USA family. Evan was also predeceased by his parents, Ferrand and Ester; three sisters, Annie, Grace and Edith; and seven brothers, Edgar, Willie, Edmond, Ernest, Elmer, Eric, and Elton John, leaving his youngest sister Jean and many nieces and nephews to cherish his memory.
Evan was born on February 4, 1920, on the family farm near Forshee AB. From here he attended school to Grade 8 and worked hard on the farm. In 1941 at the age of 21, he enlisted in the Canadian Army and saw action as an ambulance driver at Dieppe, and until the end of the War, as a truck driver in France, Holland, Belgium and Germany. On March 20, 1945, while on leave, he married Nora Smith of Sible Hedingham, England, and enjoyed a long and happy marriage. After the War, Evan farmed in partnership with his father in Forshee and later on his own, until he and Nora retired to Red Deer. In their retirement, they tended their gardens, enjoyed socials with the War Brides, and travelled extensively. After Nora’s death, Evan and his son Dan lived in their condo until Evan reached 100 years.
Evan was an organic farmer, a responsible steward of the land; a strong man who never shirked hard work; a great storyteller with a gift for names and details; a believer in taking a bit of time for play; and a devoted family man. He was also one of the few remaining veterans of WWII in Red Deer.
The family would like to extend a public thank you to the staff on Unit 33 of the Red Deer Hospital and at The Hamlets in Red Deer County for their excellent care. A private, family interment took place at Alto Rest Cemetery.
