Eugenie Elizabeth O’Neill (nee Morrison)
August 29, 1940 – December 1, 2024
It is with heavy hearts that the O’Neill family announces the peaceful passing of Eugenie Elizabeth O’Neill (Jean) on December 1, 2024.
Jean was born on August 29, 1940, and grew up in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia. From an early age, her natural compassion and sense of duty shone, inspiring her to pursue a career in nursing. She graduated from St. Joseph’s Hospital School of Nursing in Glace Bay in 1961 and moved to Montreal to work at the Montreal General Hospital. There, she lived with friends Ellen and Marie-Clare and enjoyed the city as a young woman. She often reflected on this time as one of joy and adventure.
In 1963, Jean married her childhood sweetheart, Ronald (Rannie) J. O’Neill. Together, they embarked on a lifelong love, beginning their married life together in Hemer, Germany, where Rannie was stationed with the military. The couple made the most of their time in Europe, traveling before returning to Cape Breton, where their son Eric was born. As they moved around, they welcomed a daughter Rhonda, before settling in Lower Sackville, Nova Scotia. They built a home filled with love, laughter, and chocolate—Jean’s favorite indulgence.
A devoted wife and mother, Jean paused her nursing career to raise her children. Her talent for caregiving extended to her family and beyond, making her a steadfast supporter during times of need. In 1985, she returned to her nursing career at Windsor Elms Senior’s Residence, where she brought warmth, humor, and dignity to her work. Upon retiring, she embraced the role of grandmother to Shana, her pride and joy.
Jean was a woman of many passions. She had a deep love of history, taking great interest in the stories of the past. Her devotion to her family and friends was unwavering and she was quick to lend a helping hand. A Cape Bretoner by birth and at heart, her home was always open, and her support was a constant.
Jean’s faith was central to her life. Raised in the Roman Catholic Church, she was an active member of the Saint John Vianney parish and St. Elizabeth Seton in Lower Sackville. In 2016, she moved to Alberta to be closer to her family.
Jean is survived by her son, Dr. Eric O’Neill, daughter Rhonda, and much-loved granddaughter Shana, her brother-in-law John O’Neill (Shirley Hinks), her sister-in-law Margie (Dave Smith), her nieces and nephews, many cousins and their children and dear friends. She was predeceased by her husband of 42 years, Ronald J. O’Neill (2005), her parents Stephen and Alfreda Morrison (née Brochart), her grandmother Eugenie (Jenny), her nephew Mark, several cousins, and friends.
Though our hearts ache, we take comfort knowing she is at peace and reunited with those who have gone before her. Her kindness, humor, and unwavering strength will remain in the hearts of those who knew her.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Drs. Darnell, Prins, Van Niekerk, and Unger, as well as the dedicated Nurses, Aides, and staff of the Lacombe Hospital and Care Centre. Special thanks also go to the Nurses of the Lacombe Home Care program for their exceptional and compassionate care.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society or a charity of your choice. This summer, the family will bring Jean back to Nova Scotia and hold a small service to celebrate her life.
