Elizabeth Ann McInerney “Betty” or “Liz”
June 13th, 1952 – September 9th, 2025
On September 9th, 2025, Betty passed away peacefully and painlessly, at home, with her two daughters by her side, her hands clasped in prayer.
Betty was predeceased by her parents, Harry and Ann; sister-in-law, Johanne; brother-in-law, Herman; nephew, Ryan; and best friend, Christine. She will be lovingly remembered by her daughters, Lauren (Ben) and Mallory (Ian); grandson, Remy; sisters, Patty, Cathy (Tony); brother, Michael; nieces, Tara (Rob), Kerry (Chris), Catherine (Chris), Genevieve (Eric), Dayna, and Shauna (Josh); nephew, James; BFF’s, Gisela, Ardith, and Lucy; kitties, Clio and Calliope; and many friends.
Betty loved life. She had many hobbies at which she excelled: playing pool, golf, crossword puzzles, Boggle, hiking, reading, gardening, as well as playing piano and singing. She was the life of every party and the greatest cheerleader of her friends and family. She made friends with almost everyone she met, immediately knew their names and family details, and never forgot them.
She was born in Chilliwack, BC, but spent most of her school years in Winnipeg where she met her best friends, Gisela, Ardith, Christine, and Lucy. Betty cherished their nearly 60-year friendship over long distances, getting together for many trips, a cruise, and hiking the Juan de Fuca.
Betty married Bill Schellenberg in 1976 (div. 1990) and had two daughters, Lauren and Mallory, with whom she shared all her love and many adventures, like walking the Camino Trail (France), and hiking the BC Rail Trail and the Epinette Trail (MB).
Betty was always close with her family. She would host Easter dinner, serve her famous scalloped potatoes and cheesecake, and she and her sisters, Patty and Cathy, along with the kids and the grandparents, would sing family songs in harmony, or each perform their “party pieces” after entreaties from the room.
Betty will be fondly remembered by her colleagues at Red River College, where she worked for 20 years as Program Manager, from where she retired in 2008.
Betty’s family is sincerely grateful to the wonderful nurses at Cancer Care, and the DI department at the Red Deer Regional Hospital, as well as the staff at Cronquist Pharmacy.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, October 15th at 1:00 p.m. at St. John Brebeuf Church, 1707 John Brebeuf Place in Winnipeg.
Memorial donations may be made to the Lending Cupboard (Red Deer), the Mustard Seed (Red Deer), or to Siloam Mission (Winnipeg). Condolences to the family may be made by visiting www.eventidefuneralchapels.com
