Johnson (Wemp), Elizabeth Ann
1941 – 2022
Elizabeth Ann Johnson passed away peacefully in her sleep in the early morning of May 22, 2022 in Red Deer. She was predeceased by her sweetheart and husband of more than 60 years Wayne; her dear brother Alan Wemp; special granddaughter Ashley Layden; great granddaughter Brooke Battenfelder; brothers in law Derek and Gary Johnson; and her parents Gordon and Helen Wemp.
Ann will affectionately be remembered for her many enchanting characteristics and antics. Her expressive blue eyes straightaway let you know how she was feeling (whether it was that mischievous sparkle, a soft loving glance, or the look that said something had just pissed her off). We loved them all! She had many adventures enjoying nature while rock hunting, camping and just dipping her feet in lakes and creeks (or the nearest wading pool). Many cats made their home with her over the years; each one becoming a cherished family member. Ann loved her soaps and even watched them at the office where she worked for many years with her buddy Shannon. She was proficient at word games and puzzles and was also known to crush Zelda; competing with Wayne and the grandkids during her Nintendo phase. Treasure hunting with her at garage sales, thrift stores or the Samaritan sale often scored a bounty (or at least a story or two). She had an unyielding generosity and a flair for encouraging, inspiring, and even endowing others to dream big and be adventurous (put on those Red Boots!) Ann dedicated many years to serving her community, including as a life-long member and past president of the Calgary Activettes where her many talents and creativity really had a chance to shine. She was also a beloved mentor and friend within a special group of friends with whom she met regularly and they became a most cherished part of her life.
We all learned so much from her. Whether through her famous home-ec lessons (it’s a kitchen out there Auntie Ann); her sage advice; witty or humorous way of recounting a story, event or show; or the sharing of her unique and thought provoking opinions. But most of all, we learned to be better people through her example of how to keep moving through life, no matter the circumstance with loyalty, courage, integrity and humour. All who knew her are all the better for it.
Ann’s many loved ones who will miss her dearly include her four children Debbie Layden (Darcy), Lorilee Gramlich (Greg), Jeffrey Wayne Johnson, and Diana Lippert (Dwain); beloved sisters Kathy Berg (Lorne) and Vicki Wemp (Bob); treasured sisters in law Pat Wemp, Donna Little (Cy), Shirley Johnson and Shirley O’Hara; special cousin-in-law and pal, Lynn Pendergast (Ron); seven grandchildren (each held a special and unique relationship with her); eight great grandchildren; and her many Wemp and Armstrong cousins. Ann also holds a very special place in the hearts of countless others (nieces, nephews, friends) as their beloved Auntie Ann (Ann T Ann, Ten Ten).
Ann’s children invite family and friends to join them on Tuesday, May 31 at 9:30a.m. to pay your respects at Eventide Fuenral Home, at 11:00 a.m. to lay her to rest beside Wayne in the Innisfail Cemetery and to stay immediately afterward for a wiener roast and banana split party at nearby Centennial Park in Innisfail (Ann’s treat – just bring your own lawn chair, memories and funny stories).
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Ann’s favorite “Hope for Wildlife” ww.hopeforwildlife.net/donations, or to your local SPCA.
