Eleanor Joy Johnson
Our beloved Eleanor Joy Johnson entered into the presence of the Lord on February 15, 2025, at the age of 95.
Eleanor was born to Jacob and Ida Hansen in the High River Hospital on September 16, 1929. She grew up in the Frankburg district south of Blackie, Alberta. As a child, she liked to ride her horse and play hockey with her older brother Harold and his friends on the rink her dad built.
In 1947 she attended hairdressing school and eventually had her own little shop in Blackie. Strolling down the street one day she caught the attention of a young man from Calgary who was working in Blackie. That young man, Martin Johnson, eventually proposed and they were married in 1950. The newlyweds remained in Alberta for a short time welcoming their first child into their union, Darrell Johnson, in 1951. In 1952 they headed westward to Prince George spending over 20 years there and welcoming 3 more blessings to their growing family, Raymond, Brenda, and James (Jimmy) Johnson. During this time Eleanor worked at Unemployment Insurance. In 1970 they moved south and after a short stay in Fernie, they headed west and landed in the Fraser Valley. They spent 25 years in the Fraser Valley where Eleanor again worked for Employment Insurance Canada. Also, during this time, they suffered the tragic loss of their daughter Brenda and Eleanor became a full-time parent to their grandson Jacob.
Eleanor retired from her position at Employment Insurance Canada in 1989. After retirement, she enjoyed many years of traveling with her husband. In 1995 Eleanor and Martin moved back to their Alberta roots and settled in High River where she enjoyed golfing, traveling, and visiting with family and friends. During her time in High River, she was predeceased by her youngest son Jim in 2009, her oldest son Darrell in 2011 and her loving husband of 62 years in 2012.
In 2022 Eleanor made one last move to Red Deer, Alberta to be closer to her grandson Jacob and his family. She enjoyed almost three years of Friday night movie nights with them, gatherings on their front deck, birthdays, holidays, and Chinese food feasts.
Eleanor was full of wit and strength and she will be deeply missed by her surviving son Raymond, grandsons Jacob (Julie), and Tyler (Suzanne), granddaughter Chloe (Mike), great-grandchildren Trevelyan, Austin, Jaxon, Jolee, Barrett, Eleanor, Aleira and Dallas and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and dear friends.
“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”
Psalm 34:18
