Dusty (Angus) Cowell

My adored husband of over 33 years, my best friend and the man I loved from the depths of my soul, passed away on Saturday, February 24th, 2024 at the Red Deer Hospice. I was so blessed that I was by his side, telling him how much we all loved him, ensuring that he left this world with all the love his heart could hold as he took his last breath.
Throughout his cancer journey, and especially in his last days, Dusty was surrounded by all the love that he so generously gave to others. This included his adored family, our cherished children Kris (Audrey), Travis (Laura), and Jenni (Brad), along with his much-loved grandchildren Jose, Ethan, Milly, Payton, Ali, Harlan, and Noah. This also includes his very dear friend Jay, who was by his side every step of this journey. He also leaves behind 3 sons, Kirk, Rob, and Dean, and their families.
Dusty was a man of impeccable character who lived his life with humour and a heart, and spirit as big as the moon. His infectious, positive attitude was evident whenever someone asked how he was doing. His answer was always, “every day is a good day, some are just better than others”. He preferred to back into a driveway because, “I don’t like to start the day going backwards”.
Dusty’s childhood dream was to come west and be a cowboy. Dream accomplished. Dusty worked ranches in his earlier years after a stint in the Army. To see Dusty sit upon a horse, was a site to behold. It literally took your breath away. He had horses up until a year ago when his health continued to decline. He was a master floor layer and handyman and his talents were in great demand all over Central Alberta. He recently delved into wood working and carving, and as always, he excelled. His bowls, charcuterie and cutting boards were beautiful and I will cherish my little wooden figures that he just started carving for me.
My beloved Dusty’s greatest pride was his family and he was definitely the heart of ours.
We haven’t yet figured out how we move forward without our adored Husband, Dad, and Papa but we will live our lives in the light of his love, in his honour and memory.
There will be no funeral service at his request. A celebration of life will be held in the summer.
Should you wish to make a donation in Dusty’s memory or honour, please do so to the Red Deer Hospice or the Canadian Cancer Society for esophageal cancer research. Condolences to Dusty’s family may be emailed to meaningful@telus.net. Please indicate “Cowell” in the subject line.
