With great sadness we announce the peaceful passing of Douglas Keith Hautala on April 10, 2024, at the Red Deer Regional Hospital at the age of 70, after a courageous year long battle with cancer.
Doug was born in Thunder Bay, Ontario and was the oldest of four. He moved to Alberta in the early 2000’s, and in 2004, he met Rosemarie who he married on May 7, 2009, in Las Vegas. Doug was warmly welcomed by Rosemarie’s family (Profeits, Tomaltys, and Edwards). Doug embraced Nick (Rosemarie’s son) as his own and anytime he could, he attended Nick’s hockey games. He was so proud when Nick’s Midget AA team won a Provincial Championship. They truly had a special bond.
Doug was passionate about his employment as Safety Manager at Site C Dam in Fort St. John. He worked until his cancer diagnosis in 2023, and his goal with treatment was to get back to work. Doug made many friends and would do anything to help others. He will be remembered for his infectious smile, his laugh, strong willed personality, and his generosity. His love for travel led him and Rosemarie on many road trips, holidays in Mexico, and a Caribbean cruise. He always enjoyed watching baseball, hockey, and football.
Doug was predeceased by his mother Elizabeth Lloyd in 2008, and his brother John in 2017.
Doug is survived by his wife Rosemarie, stepson Nick (Jessica), his sister Karen and family, brother Leonard, sister-in-law MaryLou Hautala, and family. He is also survived by many more family members and friends and will be missed. Many thanks to the Oncologists and all doctors and nurses who were involved in providing excellent care especially on Palliative unit 32.
Special Thanks to Shirley Woods for attending appointments and offering support through our journey.
At Doug’s request, there will be no funeral service. A gathering of family and special friends will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be directed to the Red Deer Hospice Society, 99 Arnot Ave. Red Deer Alberta T4R 3S6. Condolences to Doug’s family may be emailed to meaningful@telus.net. Please indicate “Hautala” in the subject line.
