MACDOUGALL, Angus Douglas
His deep, strong voice is silent His gentle heart is still
He fought so hard to stay here He couldn’t change God’s will
With heavy hearts and rivers of tears, we share the sad news of Doug’s passing on Sunday, June 30, 2024. Doug MacDougall slipped away peacefully while surrounded by loving family following a courageous seven-month battle with cancer.
Doug was a strong, talented man with a contagious smile and a big heart. Doug was one of eleven children to hardworking parents Donald Roderick MacDougall and Mary Jane (MacNeil) MacDougall. Growing up on beautiful and rugged Cape Breton Island, Doug would become a strong, independent man who always put his family first. His career began with Etobicoke Hydro in Ontario, where he would complete his apprenticeship as a Journeyman Lineman. This was also where he would meet and marry the love of his life, Kathy. His hard work ethic and leadership caught the attention of Alberta Power Ltd. (A.P.L), who would eventually recruit him and his budding family to Alberta. Doug invested twenty years working all over the province for A.P.L, making many lifelong friends along the way. Following retirement from A.P.L, Doug needed another challenge. His part-time tree services work would become his new passion, which he would grow into a full- time career as a self-employed Utility Arborist. His days were most fulfilling when he could work alongside his children in the community and offer bucket rides to curious spectators for the price of a smile. He would continue this honest, rewarding work right up until his cancer diagnosis in December 2023.
Doug was an ambivert who loved spontaneous adventure as much as quiet time beside the fire with a good book. He enjoyed hunting trips with close friends, and spending quality time with family close to home. There is a wall in the basement that is a testament to how much he loved his grandkids, with lines drawn all over to show their changing heights over the years. Everyone looked forward to the annual family trips to Victoria, BC to visit Doug’s parents and island family, where they would camp together in Goldstream Provincial Park. Having taught hunters training courses as a side hobby for over three decades, Doug loved sharing his passion for nature and survival with kids and friends alike. His bold but gentle demeanor made him the perfect teacher. His calm, deep voice was always a heart-warming comfort to those around him, and it will forever resonate within those who knew him well. “When you find your gift, share it”.
He will be fondly remembered by his family, dear friends, siblings, nieces, and nephews; his beloved wife, Kathleen; his son Lou (Carrie) of Summerland, British Columbia and their children, Arya, Kyara, Steel and Chet; his daughter, Kyla (Calvin) Connell of Stettler, Alberta and their children, Krystina, Cassidy, Billy, Dexter, and Dalyce; his son, Michael of Stettler, Alberta; his son, Jim of Rocky Mountain House, Alberta and Jim’s sons, Griffin and Cooper; his daughter, Michelle (John) Dixon of Erskine, Alberta and their daughters, Rylie and Emma; and his son, Don (Gen) of Ontario and children, Valerie and Mitchell. We will forever have a void in our hearts and an empty chair at our table. “Until we meet again”. A Private Family Memorial Service will be held at a later date. If desired, Memorial Donations in Doug’s honor may be made directly to the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation at www.stollerykids.com.
