Dorothy Hansum
On January 3, 2025, our beloved Mom passed peacefully at home surrounded by family, into heaven to the open arms of Jesus, her Lord and Saviour. Born to John and Tina Busaan on October 23, 1935, in Lippenhuizen, Friesland, The Netherlands. Dorothy was the middle of 3 siblings, Wilma her older sister and younger brother John and the family immigrated to the Woody Nook community in 1951.
Through their young adult church group, Dorothy met the love of her life. In 1958, Dorothy was married to Peter Hansum, and they built their life together for almost 60 years until his passing in 2018. In Red Deer, they raised three children: John, Debbie, and Brenda. Their family continued to grow and were blessed with 9 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren. Family was front and centre to Dorothy and the joy of her life. She took great delight when her family was together, and she was dearly loved by all of us.
Dorothy had a servant’s heart. She enjoyed serving the Red Deer Community by volunteering her time with organizations such as the Red Deer Nursing Home, Meals on Wheels, Summer Bible Camp and the Mission Thrift Store where she volunteered weekly for 33 years. She was energetic, rarely stood still and enjoyed gardening and maintaining her flower beds and was able to stay in her own home until she became a citizen of heaven.
Dorothy, Mom, Oma and Great Oma will be forever cherished and greatly missed by their children, John (Fran) Hansum, Debbie (John) Kranenborg, Brenda Hansum, grandchildren; Angela (Travis) Mayner, Michelle Hansum (Mike), Heather (Rylan) Boon, Cory Haller, Cody Haller (Nicole), Cheryl Kraneneborg (Thibaut ), John (Ashley) Kranenborg, Christina (Ryan) Morris, David (Amanda) Kranenborg and 20 great grandchildren. She will be missed by her in laws Wilma Busaan, Corry (Al) Badger, Lennie Hansum, Renee Hansum, Audrey Noordhof, nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends. Dorothy was predeceased by her parents, John and Tina Busaan, husband Peter, sister Wilma, and brother John, brother-in-laws; Bruce, Tom and Casey Hansum, Jim Kluyt, John Drost, sister-in-law, Teruka Hansum and nephew Wade Drost.
Our family would like to sincerely thank Brittany and her amazing Home Care team for the exceptional care for our lovely mom. A celebration of Dorothy’s life will be at 1:30pm on Saturday, January 11th at Impact Life Church, 20 Kelloway Crescent, Red Deer. If desired, memorial donations in Dorothy’s honor may be made to the Red Deer Mission Thrift Store. For those unable to attend the Celebration of Life, the service will be live streamed.
